After believing on Jesus Christ and committing ones life to follow the teachings of the Bible, a person needs to learn how to pray. There is not any one method or formula that must be followed, except to model prayer in the way Jesus instructed his disciples in The Lord’s Prayer.
This prayer begins with giving praise to God and affirming that we want his purposes to be established in our life and in the world. After that, the prayer asks for our daily needs to be met, for our sins to be forgiven, and for help to avoid temptation.
A person’s religious training, traditions, experiences, personality, and word fluency strongly influence the style in which he or she will pray. The way a person words a prayer is not important. It is the attitude and motive in the heart that God is concerned with.
Using prayer books or modeling our prayers after people we respect is acceptable as long as we truly mean the words we pray. The following paragraphs show some of the ways a person might pray.
I exalt your holy name and humble myself before you. Help me to worship you in spirit and in truth. I want to set my mind on you because you are my strength, my comfort, my wisdom, my healer and my deliver. Oh, Lord! I worship you for coming as the baby in the manger, to walk among men and show us the way. I bless your name for the tears you shed in the garden. You prayed there all alone with no one to comfort you as your followers slept. I praise you for choosing to carry that cross for me! I praise you for every drop of sweat and every drop of blood you shed for me. Love really grew where the blood fell, because I love you so much! Your love was already established, and those drops of blood have now established me. All glory and honor belong to you, Oh, Gentle Shepherd! You guide my heart. So gently and patiently, you shepherd me.
I thank you that your plans are to prosper me, and that you work all things together for good to those who love you and are called according to your purpose. I want to be your ambassador. Open my eyes to see my place in your kingdom; to walk in quiet confidence and strength. Let my life be like the moon that reflects the sun’s bright rays to all the world. Though it has no light of its own, it rarely fails to give a true reflection, no matter how faint, of the glorious blazing sun. Even when there is an eclipse, the moon reappears still brightly reflecting the sun, and the sun never left, but continued giving its light to the moon. The moon appears so beautiful in the light of the sun. I want to conform to your image, and so many times it seems I only reflect myself. Help me, when I fail to reflect your heart, to not waste time in regret, but to look to those things that are ahead and press on toward the mark of the high calling of your name.
I thank you that you are not finished with me yet, and that you never give up on me. You are my joy and my song, and I want to magnify you and point people to you and you alone. That’s why I thank you for the suffering you’ve brought me through, whether it be pain of my own making or something others do. I praise you that you won’t let me stay where I am, but you are faithful to stretch the borders of my mind, the limits of my human understanding, to draw me to yourself and give me glimpses of truth. I would have never known more of your ways without the suffering, and I pray for you to help me stay strong, always trusting in you, no matter what comes. I’d rather live in the shadow of the cross, in the glory of your presence than where I lived before. I tried to create you into my own image in the realm of my own understanding. Now, I see a little more of who you truly are and I am so much happier living in your world! When doubts and fears hover over me, let me call your name out loud. I see through a glass so darkly now, but a glimmer of your beautiful glory keeps shining through. Let me walk by faith until I see you face to face.
Teach me to sit at your feet and learn of you. Help me not rely on my own understanding, but to learn to wait on you to instruct me. There is nothing more beautiful than being where your glory dwells! I thank you that you withhold no good thing from me, if only I seek, knock and listen. I pray that you strengthen my faith and teach me how to pray and to intercede for others, just as you are ever interceding for me. Help me to always rejoice in you and worship you with singing, just as you rejoice with singing over me!
In your precious name I pray.
Hopefully, this example will encourage anyone who wants to pray, but doesn’t know how to begin. Prayers need not be lengthy or eloquent, but sincere from a heart that is dedicated to God.
Solid Rock (verse 2 of the hymn)
When darkness seems to hide His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
