Getting stuck with no Halloween costume can happen to anyone, but it doesn’t have to wreck Halloween. A fun homemade costume can be thrown together with just a few basic supplies and a t-shirt. Though a DIY Halloween costume may require a small bit of artistic talent, remember the goal is not perfection but rather, showing effort.
For those last minute Halloween costume parties, check the closet and throw together one of these holiday saving outfits.
A white t-shirt can quickly be turned into a pirate costume by drawing stripes with a black Sharpie or fabric paint, or even affixing black duct tape. Duct tape in many colors can be found at Dollar General, Five Below and some craft supply outlets. Cut some tatters in the bottom of the t-shirt along the hem for a ragged look. Cut a black t-shirt into three pieces, one square and two long strips. Use the rectangle as a bandana around the head and the strips to make a sash at the waist.
Using a red Sharpie, draw baseball stitching lines down the front of a white t-shirt. Using a black Sharpie, sign the names of several famous baseball players.
Using any color of t-shirt, use a Sharpie to draw side by side pages of a book. Write “Halloween Memories” above the book. Carry a Sharpie along and have friends sign the shirt.
All that’s needed for Charlie Brown is a yellow t-shirt with a black zig-zag line drawn across the middle. Add a curl of hair to the forehead with some black eyeliner and Halloween has been saved.
On a white t-shirt, draw a filmmaker’s clapboard. Write “Halloween costume: Take 23″ (or any number) on the clapboard.
With a light gray t-shirt, several colors of Sharpies can be used to draw buttons, dials and gadgets for a robot. A gray or silver gift bag with one panel cut out also makes an instant squared head piece.
On a red t-shirt, draw black lines to look like bricks. Then, using a lighter color, splash some paint on the front to spell out a graffiti message.
To make a last minute caveman Halloween costume, take an orange t-shirt and cut the bottom hem into a zig zag pattern. Then, using a black marker, draw large triangles throughout the shirt. Use a blue t-shirt to cut a strip to make a tie.
A white t-shirt can be used to make sheet music. Use a black marker to draw lines and music notes. Write in the lyrics to “Monster Mash” or “Thriller.”
This super-easy Halloween costume only requires a black t-shirt and red, yellow, and green duct tape. Make stoplight circles with the tape by criss-crossing strips until the outer edge is near-circular.

With a black t-shirt, turn into a S.W.A.T. member by simply spelling out the letters in yellow or white duct tape across the back of the shirt. Add sunglasses for a cool look.

Using a red or blue t-shirt, add a black collar using duct tape in the shape of an off-centered “V.” Then, use yellow duct tape to make a triangular emblem on the left chest.
Wrap yellow duct tape criss-crossed on a black t-shirt. Use a Sharpie to write words on the tape such as “caution” and “crime scene.”
The octopus costume requires a bit more work, but is still simple to make. Using any color t-shirt, draw large eyes onto the center or chest. Then, sew or pin long, stuffed socks to the bottom hem of the shirt. The socks can simply be stuffed with other socks or even plastic grocery bags.
Making a mermaid Halloween costume from a t-shirt is a bit time-consuming, but worth not having to deal with the last minute mad rush at the costume shops. Take a blue or green t-shirt and add strips or duct tape, alternating in a blue and green pattern. Each row of duct tape should overlap the previous strip of duct tape by one-fourth to one-half inch. The horizontal rows can be continue beyond the bottom hem of the shirt, or when the bottom hem is reached, the tape can be used to make a long, flowing blue and green skirt. Simply stick the tape to itself, either two pieces back to back or one piece folded over. Then, use a separate piece to adhere it to the horizontal strips of the main t-shirt body.
When a Halloween costume party invitation creates panic, simply look to the existing wardrobe or make a quick trip to Michaels or Target for some solid color tees and let the Halloween costume crafts begin!
