Kyemah McEntyre’s dress stuns the world because it tells the amazing fairy tale of an “ugly” bullied teen who ended up as prom queen. Kyemah McEntyre, the 18-year-old bullied New Jersey teen who designed her own prom dress, was bullied throughout her high school years being called “ugly” and “angry” by her classmates.
As reported by Headlines and Global News on June 10, the once bullied 18-year-old teen was crowned prom queen at her Cicely Tyson high school in New Jersey while wearing the stunning dress that she had designed on her own. Kyemah McEntyre’s dress was produced by the local seamstress Markell.
Kyemah McEntyre’s dress, which became famous on the internet after the teen shared her prom pictures on Instagram and Twitter, embraces McEntyre’s heritage which she describes as her “African descent.” In her Instagram caption, McEntyre describes that embracing one’s heritage, being unique, and feeling different than others is not an easy road to take:
“As an artist, I have a completely different point of view compared to other individuals. I am extremely analytical and observant. Throughout the world, we have people who do not notice each others essence and humanity. We stunt our collective spiritual growth by allowing assumptions and stereotypes to cloud our mind and thus our physical reality. We let these negative ideas get the best of us, and in turn, a world of isolation is manifested by our lack of sensitivity and desire to sympathize with each other. This results is a world in which people live within the confines of their own space, isolated from each other and separated from the rest of the world…”
To her bullies, Kyemah is leaving behind one last comment on Twitter: “This is for always being labeled as, ‘ugly’ or ‘angry’. Thank God, stereotypes are just opinions. – Kyemah McEntyre”
To others who are being bullied, Kyemah has one important message: “The most creative people are the ones who step out of their comfort zone and take advantage of the world around them… Don’t let anyone define you. Beautiful things happen when you take pride in yourself.”
Kyemah McEntyre’s dress, which reflects Kyemah’s true essence and physical reality, has propelled the teen’s life away from being bullied and negative ideas to a world of creativity and growth. Making the most of her new-found fashion fame, the 18-year-old teen is now promoting her artistic skills on her Etsy store. In the fall, Kyemah is heading to New York to study at Parson’s School of Design — the same place where Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, and Donna Karan learned their trade and fulfilled their dreams.
