Philadelphia rocker, Kurt Vile’s anticipated sixth album, b’lieve i’m going down… is to be released on Matador Records on September 25. Today, he debuts “Pretty Pimpin” the first track and video of that album. Bay Area folks can catch him with his band, The Violators at The Fillmore this October.
“Pretty Pimpin” talks of a lost soul who looks in the mirror and asks “…who’s this stupid clown locked in the bathroom sink?” over a Tom Petty-esque guitar riff. All the while the days roll past and though he doesn’t recognize the man-in-the-mirror, he knows it’s him. He sings, “oh silly me, that’s just me.” It’s an existential disconnect set to song that throws up all kinds of other questions.
Yet, Vile who is married with two young daughters appears the very portrait of the happy family man, even altering the way he wrote and recorded to accommodate the domestics of kids. He stayed up with them and helped put them to bed, only retiring to work after his wife fell asleep and silence set upon the house.
In a Press Release, Kim Gordon – a longtime fan wrote using the same disregard for cap letters in the colloquial speak employed by Vile himself, calling the album “…a handshake across the country, east to west coast, thru the dustbowl history (“valley of ashes”) of woody honest strait forward talk guthrie, and a cali canyon dead still nite floating in a nearly waterless landscape. The record is all air, weightless, bodyless, but grounded in convincing authenticity, in the best version of singer songwriter upcycling.”
Taking it all in his stride, Vile’s album was recorded across the country from Brooklyn to Athens, Georgia, Southern California and the famed Joshua Tree rock outpost of the Rancho De La Luna (QTSA, Dave Grohl and Arctic Monkeys).
In an interview, Vile revealed that it was at the Rancho De La Luna that he feels he wrote his best song, the desert track “Wheelhouse”. The song was written just before he left for Joshua Tree where he had originally gone to see Saharan desert-guitar collective, Tinariwen who have relocated to the Mojave due to political conflicts at home.
Vile was blessed with the opportunity to jam the new song with Tinariwen at the studio the week before and after booking some last minute studio time, he finished the track as the sun came up over the desert one morning.
Now we can all look forward to “Wheelhouse” which is the fifth song listed in the album’s listing.
Vile will kick off his tour on Oct 2 in Boston and play the two weekends of Austin City Limits before the Fillmore on Oct 16. His tour will also include dates in the UK and Europe through November.
