World Famous KROQ 106.7 announced its annual Almost Acoustic Christmas show on Nov. 16. The 26th annual event will bring together more than twenty alternative rock artists over two nights, December 12 and 13, at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif.
Saturday’s lineup is anchored by Weezer, Silversun Pickups, Cage The Elephant and Twenty One Pilots, each performing music from their recent (or forthcoming) albums. Other acts include AWOLNATION, Bastille, Disclousre, Foals, Halsey, The Struts and X Ambassadors. Schedules and order of appearance have yet to be determined, but the show should begin at 4:00 p.m. each day. Fall Out Boy, Chris Cornell, Of Monsters and Men and Panic! at the Disco cap Sunday’s bill. They will be joined by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, Cold War Kids, Elle King, George Ezra, James Bay, The 1975 and The Neighbourhood.
Unlike year’s past, this year’s talent features mostly mainstream alternative rock talent. Social media was abuzz with expectations of Muse or Coldplay, given schedules that put them in the general vicinity during the show. However, the only artists with old-school credentials is Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave) and perhaps Weezer. That said, Twenty One Pilots have been selling out arenas in anticipation for their Emotional Roadshow summer tour. There also remains hope that a surprise guest or two will hit the stage a la No Doubt (2012), Sublime With Rome (2009), Kanye West (2008), The Killers (2007) and Gwen Stefani (2004).
Keeping true with previous years, the show will benefit two programs aimed at underprivileged youth. The first, Para Los Niños, is a non-profit family service agency that is formulated to assist at-risk children out of poverty towards brighter futures via educational opportunties and support. KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas will also aid the Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center to help provide a safe after-school environment to hundreds of boys and girls in South Central Los Angeles. The center offers tutoring, the capacity to teach social skills and are guided to succeed in school with an emphasis toward attaining acceptance to a college program.
Fans can revisit last year’s shows for both Saturday’s and Sunday’s performances. It was an off-the-hook show, where KROQ pulled out all the stops for their Silver Anniversary event celebration. System of a Down, Linkin Park, Incubus, No Doubt (filling in for U2), Smashing Pumpkins and Tears for Fears were among the unforgettable cast of characters. Weezer and Fall Out Boy return for 2015.
KROQ Street Team members can purchase tickets beginning Friday, Nov. 20 at 12:00 PDT, while the general public on-sale times have not been announced yet. Tickets will be available exclusively via Ticketmaster. The event is a perpetual sell-out, so get tickets early.
