The 27th Amateur MMA & Muay Thai Kickboxing (AFN #27) event by Pahlavan Promotions was a full night of fight action. AFN #27 was held at the beautiful downtown St. Petersburg Hilton on Friday, November 6th, 2015. Sixteen Florida martial arts schools participated in the twenty-two bouts and a total of forty-four amateur kick boxers put their skills to the test. Highlights revealed more about the fighters that ranged in skill level from the “first timers” to those we have called champion.
Fighting in the ring for the first time were “first timers” Mike Trent 18, no record and training under Ben Sorsuchat (Koh Muay Thai – Land O Lakes) fought against Mike Skoyec 32, with no record and training under Josh Escher and Mike Hollobaugh (Kickin’ It Karate & Fitness – Lakewood Ranch). While it had been the first time that Skoyec had fought in the ring he had been no stranger to fighting.
Skoyec spent the first 28 years of his life battling Cystic Fibrosis until 4 years ago when he had a double lung transplant. Martial arts had been a part of his life early on as “a way to keep him opened up” but his first time competing in a “real fight” was Friday night. Skoyec walked into the ring and ended the match after just a few strikes to Trent by T.K.O. in the first round. His inspiring inspires all of us for different reasons. The Tampa Bay MMA Examiner sees a man, whom when given a chance to live a longer healthier life, choose to fully live and seize the moment. It seemed that fighting which once was a necessity is something he is very good at.
Another fighter out of Skoyecs’ gym was Dalton Jenkins. Dalton Jenkins 22, with a record of 6-6-0 and training under Joshua Escher and Mike Hollobaugh (Kickin’ It Karate & Fitness) fought against Filomino Osorio 22, with a record of 1-5-0 and training under Mario Salazar (Mt. Song Martial Arts – Tampa). Jenkins is a well known fighter in the area and an ISKA Champion. This fight marked his return to the ring after a two year absence. Jenkins won by split decision. Fan favorite Amy Dupont returned to the ring on Friday after her dominating win over Montana Judd at AFN 23. Her impressive win became known as the “bloody knockout” of that night. In her showing on Friday she was just as determined. Amy Dupont 43, with a record of 1-1-0 and training under Ali Tareh (Fight Fitness Center – St. Petersburg) fought against Megan Westerman 29, and training under Mario Salazar (Mt. Song Martial Arts). The fight between Dupont and Westerman was a close fight. Dupont seemed to have the conditioning she needed and had strength behind her punches. Westerman had reach and great footwork that enabled her to evade some of Dupont’s notorious power. Westerman won by split decision.
