Come mid-September, the world will ride in Richmond. For the first time in 30 years, an American city is hosting the UCI Road World championships (Worlds) bike race. That city just happens to be Richmond, Virginia. Championship bicyclists from around the world will pedal past Richmond’s historic sites, through Hanover’s rolling countryside and along downtown city streets in the UCI Worlds bicycle races.
The Men’s Elite Individual Time Trial of the UCI Worlds bike race will begin at Kings Dominion on Wednesday, September 23, 2015. The Doswell theme park will be open and FREE to the public on race day. The park will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Limited rides and attractions will be open.
Worlds bike race times at Kings Dominion take place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:35 p.m. The race starts on International Street. Racers will then ride past the Meadow Event Park (State Fair of Virginia) on Route 30, the historic Hanover County Courthouse on Route 301. The race path includes Brook and Wilkinson roads, Virginia Union University and into downtown Richmond. The finish line is at Broad and 5th.
Hanover County schools will be closed on Wednesday, September 23 due to the fact that several roads will be closed for the race – from 12 noon to approximately 3:30 p.m. Hanover County roads that will be closed at this time include parts of Rt. 30, Rt. 301, Gerogetown Road and Rural Point Road.
This is the perfect opportunity to come on out to the Fan Zone at Kings Dominion and cheer on your favorite riders. In addition to the Kings Dominion Fan Zone, there will be Fan Zones set up at other spots around the race course, including Hanover Tavern and the Rutland Commons shopping center.

The event includes 12 championship races for Elite Men and Women, Under 23 Men, and Junior Men and Women.
The Worlds bike race is covered by more than 500 media outlets from around the world. The Richmond 2015 Worlds bike race event is expected to attract approximately 450,000 on-site spectators from the Richmond region and around the world along with a worldwide television audience of more than 300 million.
Worlds is similar to the Olympics in that athletes compete for their country rather than their trade teams. Some of the same cyclists that participate in the Tour de France compete in Worlds.
The various Richmond 2015 Worlds bike races start at locations such as the Greater Richmond Convention Center, Kings Dominion and Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. Race distances vary between 14 and 160 miles.
Worlds takes place in Richmond, Virginia September 19 – 27, 2015. There will be festivals, expos, concerts and other special events during the nine day Richmond 2015 UCI Worlds bike race.
