Saturday night Hybrid Studios in Santa Ana was transformed into the Salamander Lounge courtesy of local band King Salamander. The event was a listening party for the band’s new album, which has been a considerable time in the making.
Upon entering the studio, guests encountered a scene that was like something out of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. Guests were encouraged to wear sharp and classy lounge attire. The guests certainly accommodated the request by dressing in some fine outfits – including a lot of black dresses on the ladies. The entry of the studio was set up with food and an open bar provided by Hotel California Tequila and Bottle Logic Brewing. The studio was set up to display the band’s instruments, which included two custom cigar-box guitars. One of those cigar-box guitars was complete with cutouts in the shape of salamanders. Those weren’t the only interesting items in the studio. There was also a floor tom, which had been transformed into a cabinet for liquor and cigars. The bass drum was also modified to include a small liquor cabinet, which can be stowed inside the drum. The Doors played throughout the studio while guests enjoyed food and cocktails.
Around 7:30, frontman Sterling Musk took the microphone and introduced the album. One thing he said was that he didn’t want this to be some old-fashioned lounge CD. He wanted it to be lounge music with attitude. After his introduction, the album was played for all the guests. Musk was right. This is most definitely a jazz album, but you’ll hear a fair amount of rock and roll in it too.
Maybe you weren’t at the listening party for King Salamander. Well, you can put on your favorite smoking jacket and create your own Salamander Lounge at home. However you want to create your Salamander Lounge, this album will be the perfect soundtrack.
