Kim Richards was not hospitalized after her recent arrest for shoplifting toys from Target. Sources denied multiple reports that Richards’ family had Kim forcibly hospitalized.
“Regardless of what is going on with her medically and mentally, she is not currently locked up,” a source told ET Aug. 9. The hospitalization rumors heated up amid reports Kim’s family is considering a psychiatric 5150 hold on Richards, who is homeless and living out of her car after leaving drug rehab for the fourth time.
“A 5150 is basically when someone is hospitalized on an involuntary basis,” psychotherapist Dr. Robi Ludwig told ET. “Which simply means they did not sign themselves into the hospital and they cannot sign themselves out. They’re basically there involuntarily.”
Ludwig explained: “It’s usually a person who is in a sicker state that ends up in a hospital involuntarily because other people have decided they can’t make decisions on their own behalf and they usually are considered a danger to themselves or others.”
Michael Jackson’s daughter, Paris Jackson, was placed on a 5150 psychiatric hold for 72 hours after her June 2014 suicide attempt. It’s the same evaluation Britney Spears got when she was forcibly hospitalized in 2008 after a series of public nervous breakdowns.
Tried To Steal Two Shopping Carts Of Toys From Dollar Section
Richards was arrested Aug. 2 for allegedly over 100 items (mostly toys) totaling $612 from a Target store in Van Nuys, California, TMZ reported. In the bizarre booking photo obtained by TMZ, Richards looks visibly distraught after the arrest.
Kim wore oversized glasses and a white hat in the photo, which was a booking photo from the Target store’s security. It is not her mugshot.
According to the police report, Kim tried to steal two shopping carts full of Target merchandise, mostly toys, totaling more than $600. Most of the items she tried to shoplift were from the dollar section. Richards was caught by security after attempting to leave the store without going through the cashier checkout.
Kim was booked for shoplifting and was released on $5,000 bail. Sources said Richards was homeless and living out of her car at the time of her arrest. Richards moved out of her rental home shortly before entering rehab in June.
Kim snuck out of drug rehab in July after staying for 30 days. After leaving rehab, Richards was house-hopping and staying with various friends and relatives before living out of her car.
In June, Kim was fired from the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” after relapsing at her daughter’s Brooke’s wedding. In April, Richards was arrested for public intoxication, resisting arrest and kicking a police officer after being thrown out of the Polo Lounge in Beverly Hills. If convicted, Kim faces two and a half years in jail.
