The Renfrew Institute has a reputation for presenting many unique activities, events, and special programs throughout the year. One such offering you can expect to find at Renfrew is the Annual Youth Fest, which has been taking place each year for well over two and a half decades.
The 26th Annual Youth Fest at Renfrew Institute will be held tomorrow, May 24, from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. There is no admission cost to attend, and this program is free and open to the public. As always, you can expect a great lineup from a variety of slated activities, including: hands-on activities, workshops, interactive entertainment, and much, much more.
This year’s theme is “Kids on the Move,” and to keep things moving along, you will enjoy many themed happenings that entail dance, performing arts, and other static activities. Kick things off in the Spirit of Dance Studio at 12:30 p.m. where Dancers from Carlisle will perform advanced hip-hop routines, enticing and inviting kids of all ages to share in. They will also be presenting afternoon Jazz and hip-hop workshops at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
This year’s featured guest will be the award-winning Lesole’s Dance Project, and this year’s feature enticement will be Dancing Through South Africa. Come experience South African dance and storytelling beginning at 2:15 p.m., and learn to develop creative potential through three dance experiences—Ndiamu (a traditional Zulu/tribal dance), Gumboot (which originated in the South African gold mines during the Apartheid years), and Pantsula (a modern hip-hip/social dance). As an experience that promotes creative expression and participation, this program also emphasizes the very important role of dance through deeper understanding and accepting of people from other cultures.
At 4:30 p.m. you can enjoy show tunes from all your favorite Broadway melodies. The Waynesboro Children’s Theatre Troupe will be singing and performing all the popular hits you’ve come to love and know so well—proving the timelessness of great music.
Additionally, many other movement-related activities will be occurring throughout the day. Some of these include: Sit Like Yoda, Stretch and Bend Like Gumby (yoga), Boogie Into Your Creative Zone (person art projects), Cheer and Shout (with Infiniti Elite Cheer Gym), Shimmy and Shake (hip Zumba jam), and a Wade/Paddle in the Creek outing that looks at outdoor life such as tiny moving water creatures and blue heron with guides and the student scientists WaterStriders. Other pursuits include: Spin on the Wind (making flashy pinwheels), Critters That Wiggle and Hop (an examination of tadpoles, frogs and other backyard critters), Hoop Moves (hulu hoop moves), Beats and Twirls (drum ribbons), Spin and Glitter (crafts from old CDs), and Blowin in the Wind (windsock making).
All onsite activities are free for Youth Fest and will take place in the Renfrew Park at 1010 East Main Street, Waynesboro, PA, 17268. Rain location will be at Hooverville Elementary School. For more information, call 717-762-0373 or visit www.renfrewinstitute.org.
