Long before Katrina hit, Ray Nagin, then New Orleans’ mayor, knew that Katrina wasn’t just a nasty hurricane. He knew it was an historic hurricane heading directly for his city. As this article shows, there was a plan in place to evacuate the city. The sad thing is that Mayor Nagin didn’t utilize the plan. Pictures of school buses sitting in a flooded parking lot littered the internet back then. Mayor Nagin, a Democrat didn’t deploy them to evacuate New Orleans.
This article by Jamelle Bouie insists that the Black Lives Matter movement was started that horrific weekend. Mr. Bouie’s version of the event is colorful but it isn’t accurate. In his opinion, Katrina started the Black Lives Matter movement because he thinks that things would have been different if New Orleans had more whites.
That’s fanciful thinking but it doesn’t have anything to do with reality. First, blaming Katrina on President Bush is typical Democrat spin. While there’s no disputing that FEMA’s first response wasn’t adequate, the pictures would have been dramatically different if Mayor Nagin and Gov. Kathleen Blanco hadn’t frozen when their city and their state, respectively, needed them most.
In an ABC News and Washington Post poll taken shortly after the hurricane, 71 percent of blacks said that New Orleans would have been “better prepared” if it were a “wealthier city with more whites,” and 76 percent said the federal government would have “responded faster.” A Newsweek poll confirmed this sense among black Americans that the government responded slowly because most of the affected people were black. “I, to this day, believe that if that would have happened in Orange County, California, if that would have happened in South Beach, Miami, it would have been a different response,” said then Mayor Ray Nagin in a speech to the National Association of Black Journalists, a year after the storm.
Mayor Nagin is partially right. His city would’ve been better prepared if New Orleans wasn’t run by Mayor Nagin. Louisiana would’ve been better prepared if Louisiana hadn’t been run by Gov. Blanco. If this pair of Democrats hadn’t been this inept, the pictures of flooded school buses and people jammed into the Superdome wouldn’t have been taken because the school buses would’ve been used to evacuate the Superdome and get people to safety.
It’s ironic that Mr. Bouie’s theory that the Black Lives Matter movement started because of Katrina. It’s ironic because Democrat politicians didn’t rescue traditionally Democrat voters in New Orleans. It was Democrats who filibustered the Civil Rights Act. It was a Democrat governor, George Wallace, that said “In the name of the greatest people that have ever trod this earth, I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny, and I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.”
