The MTV Video Music Awards 2015 were televised on Sunday night. According to Rolling Stone on Sunday, at MTV’s VMA show, Kanye West was given the Vanguard award. Likely with the eye on ratings, it was well-publicized that Taylor Swift would be giving the award to West. It was considered a high point of the show, considering the first time the two had gotten together years ago on the VMA stage, Kanye grabbed Taylor’s award and basically said it was a travesty that Taylor won. His arrogance thought it could dictate that Beyoncé should have gotten the award. While many may have hoped Taylor would have gotten even on Sunday night, it didn’t happen.
Taylor was typically gracious and her adoring self. Beyond being gracious, she fawned over Kanye as if he truly is really someone special in her way of thinking. She said that when she was 12 years old, she and her brother bought their first recording on I-Tunes and it was a Kanye project. When receiving the Michael Jackson Vanguard award, Kanye took his time in spewing his opinions against awards shows – in spite of the fact that these shows haven’t hurt his career one bit – and telling “bro” repeatedly to “listen to the kids.” He rambled – and rambled – with not-so-effective dramatic pauses about everything from God to his grandfather to shopping with his daughter for juice in a grocery store – or something like that – and, the relatively obvious fact that he smoked something before accepting his coveted award from Taylor. The alleged speech lasted about 15 minutes – about the time five more performers could have entertained the live and television audiences with more music.
At the end of the disjointed and rambling speech, Kanye said he will be running for president in 2020. There are no official statistics that reveal how many people still had the show on by the time he reached that portion of his speech. It’s assumed that there were fewer listeners at the end of the speech than there were when Taylor initially called him up on stage to get the award. Anyway, he must have expected a bigger reaction than he got as the crowd’s reaction was polite but nothing one could possibly call robust. It was definitely not the explosive reaction he most apparently expected. The camera quickly focused on Taylor who was by then standing next to Kanye’s wife Kim Kardashian. Taylor tried to look shocked at the presidential announcement – revealing that she could use some acting lessons – and Kim appeared to be trying to look proud of her man. Neither one of them offered a first endorsement of the first presidential candidate of 2020.
According to E! Online, it appeared that reporters and people on social media were much more interested in seeing Kanye having a ‘date night’ with his famous wife than they even were in the recipients of the awards. Social media was much more interested in that garb Kim was wearing as she stood next to her said-to-be trendy husband in the front row throughout the show. If there was anything as shockingly interesting as the twerking between Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke from a few years ago, I must have been away from the television as the pizza arrived. Basically, the show paled in comparison to that year’s show – even with Nicki Minaj ironically calling Miley Cyrus the b-word, face-to-face. Leave it to Minaj to turn her coveted trophy-receiving moment into a time to respond to a little spat she had with Miley – a spat that had already turned into a non-issue to most. Miley chose to take the high road and navigated it well. She handled the inappropriateness of Minaj with grace. As host of the event, Miley showed she can be somewhat of a class act after all, if one believes that somebody can be classy with few clothes on.
If you’re interested in who actually won the awards, here’s the list:
- Best Rock Video: Fall Out Boy, “Uma Thurman”
- Best Pop Video: Taylor Swift, “Blank Space”
- Best Male Video: Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars, “Uptown Funk”
- Best Hip-Hop Video: Nicki Minaj, “Anaconda”
- Best Female Video: Taylor Swift, “Blank Space”
- Best Video With a Social Message: Big Sean featuring Kanye West & John Legend, “One Man Can Change the World”
- Artist to Watch: Fetty Wap
- Video of the Year: Taylor Swift featuring Kendrick Lamar, “Bad Blood”
Apparently there is justice after all – for Taylor. She won the Video of the Year award for “Bad Blood” – and a couple other awards. And she was actually allowed to walk off the stage without anyone disrespecting her fine moments. Come to think of it, it would have been more newsworthy if she had said she was going to take on Hillary in 2016! But, nothing as interesting as that happened during the live show.
And for those interested, according to Billboard Magazine, this was Kanye’s total speech:
Listen to the kids. Jeremy, I gotta put it down for a second. Jeremy Scott designed it.
First of all, thank you Taylor for being so gracious and giving me this award this evening. Thank you. And I often think back to the first day that I met you also. You know, I think about when I’m in the grocery store with my daughter and I have a really great conversation about fresh juice, you know? And at the end they say, ‘Oh, you’re not that bad after all.’ And like, I think about it sometimes. It crosses my mind a little bit like when I go to a baseball game and 60,000 people boo me.
It crosses my mind a little bit. And I think if I had to do it all again, what would I have done? Would I have worn a leather shirt? Would I have drank a half a bottle of Hennessy and given it to the rest of the audience? If I had a daughter at that time, would I have went onstage and grabbed the mic from someone elses (sic)? You know, this arena, tomorrow, it’s going to be a completely different setup, some concert or something like that. This stage will be gone. After that night, the stage is gone but the effect that it had on people remained. The problem was, the contradiction is, I do fight for artists. But in that fight, I somehow was disrespectful to artists. I didn’t know how to say the right thing, the perfect thing.
I just, I sat at the Grammys and saw Justin Timberlake and Cee Lo lose. Gnarls Barkley and the ‘Sexyback’ album. Justin, I ain’t trying to put you on blast but I saw that man in tears, bro. And I was thinking like, he deserved to win Album of the Year. And the small box that we are as entertainers of the evening, how could you explain that? Sometimes I feel like, you know, all this sh-t they run about beef and all that, sometimes I feel like I died for the artist’s opinion, for an artist to have an opinion after they were successful. I’m not a politician, bro!
And look at that. You know how many times MTV ran that footage again because it got them more ratings? You know how many times they announced Taylor was presenting the award because it got more ratings? Listen to the kids, bro! I still don’t understand award shows. I don’t understand how they get five people who work their entire life, one sold records, sold concert tickets, to come, stand on a carpet and for the first time in their life, be judged on a chopping block and had the opportunity to be considered a loser. I don’t understand it, bro! I don’t understand what the biggest album or the biggest video. I’m conflicted, bro. I just wanted people to like me more.
But f—k that, bro! 2015. I will die for the art, for what I believe in, and the art ain’t always polite. Y’all might be thinking right now, did he smoke something before he came out here? The answer is yes, I rolled up a little something. I’m not dead, y’all. I don’t know what’s going to happen tonight. I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow, bro. But all I can say to my artists, my fellow artists, just worry about how you feel at the time. Just worry about how you feel, and don’t never.
I’m confident. I believe in myself. We the millennials, bro. This is a new mentality. We not gonna control our kids with brands. We not going to teach hate to our kids. We’re going to teach our kids that they can be something, that they can believe in themselves. If my grandfather was here right now, he would not let me back down. I don’t know what I (inaudible) lose after this. It don’t matter though, because it’s not about me. It’s about ideas, bro, new ideas, people with ideas, people who believe in truth.
And yes, as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided, in 2020, to run for president.
No doubt, Kanye’s presidential campaign slogan will be “Listen to the kids, bro.” For younger VMA award show viewers, it should be noted that “bro” is a term that was very often used between male friends, and was a popular term back in the 1970s. And as far as Kanye’s announcement that he’s running for president, social media didn’t really get a jolt from that announcement. Maybe 2020 is just too far away for many people to care yet. More people were actually responding to Kanye’s disrespect of Justin Timberlake – which shouldn’t concern Justin too much because the number of viewers of the show would have been dramatically decreased by that the time mentally-altered West made the diss. The awards show’s hostess Miley Cyrus, who actually did a respectable job, was undoubtedly right when she said – after Kanye’s speech – that Kanye was talking after he smoked too much weed. The notion that he was high on weed would most likely negate his whole speech’s content – including the plea to ‘listen to the kids, bro.’
Yet, some people are taking him seriously. The first thing I saw on Facebook, after there was a post about Kanye running for president in 2020, was some lady commenting on the news. In response to Kanye running for president, she wrote: “I want to leave this country!” It already had a couple thousand ‘likes.’ I didn’t add a ‘like,’ because I don’t want Facebook targeting me with Kanye stories and ads, as it’s rumored that’s what Facebook does when you ‘like’ something.
If nothing else, Kanye ought to make the Guinness World Book of Records for having the most grammatical errors in an official presidential candidacy announcement – hands down, bro. I didn’t actually check other presidential candidacy announcements to verify this, but some things are just pretty obvious. As far as Kanye receiving the Michael Jackson Vanguard award with that speech, there has been no word as to whether spinning was heard in the vicinity of Jackson’s grave. Again, some things are just pretty obvious, though. Until next year’s MTV VMA show, ‘listen to something or somebody else, bro. Peace!’
