Summer has arrived and plans are being made by families everywhere for vacations and adventures that will be filled with memories.
Just be aware of what you eat when you travel, or enjoy a “staycation” or just go about your everyday life.
You might think that you can get away with eating fatty foods for a few days without it making any significant changes to your body.
A new report found that “just five days of eating a high-fat diet… could lead to long-term problems such as weight gain, obesity, and other health issues.”
That’s right…it only takes is five days for your body’s muscle to start to protest against the lack of nutrition. This is the first study to prove that the manner in which muscle metabolizes nutrients is changed in just five days of high-fat eating.
Researchers stated, “This shows that our bodies are can respond dramatically to changes in diet in a shorter time frame than we have previously thought.”
To conduct the study, healthy college-age students were fed a fat-laden diet were 55% fat.
A normal diet is made up of about 30% fat.
The study showed the manner in which the muscles metabolized glucose was altered in the group with the higher fat diet.
The reality is that you will rarely lose weight on your vacation, but there are some simple ways to assure the damage isn’t dreadful.
- Watch the alcohol intake. We all love those fruity drinks with fun umbrellas while sitting around the pool. But the truth is that many of these sweet liquor drinks are made with sugary syrup and can contain up to 500 calories! So why it is okay to indulge a bit, try to choose “skinnier” drinks like wine or consider ditching the alcohol and order a refreshing Arnold Palmer.
- Fit in some fitness. Many vacations include walking tours, most hotels include fitness centers, sun-filled trips are a perfect time to enjoy swimming and you can even take along a jump rope or exercise band. There really are several simple options to stay active while you are away from home.
- Keep healthy snacks on you at all times so you’re not tempted when you’re out sightseeing. Grab a banana or apple from the hotel before you leave or stash some almonds in your bag.
And of course, most importantly, simply have fun and relax!
