Willie Nelson, a Texas and worldwide icon, in his six-decade career and 200 plus albums is one of the greatest artists of our time. He has earned every conceivable award as a musician and amassed reputable credentials as an author, actor and activist. In 2015, Willie released Django & Jimmie, a critically acclaimed album of duets with Merle Haggard.
Another Texas treasure, songwriter and country singer Kacey Musgraves from Mineola, Texas will join the party. Kacey self-released three albums and began writing songs with major country artists like Martina McBride and Miranda Lambert. Mercury Records signed Kacey in 2012, and issued a first single, “Merry Go ‘Round.” later that same year from Kacey’s debut album for Mercury, Same Trailer Different Park, was released in March 2013, “Merry Go Round” won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song at the 56th Grammy Awards drawing widespread praise. Musgraves was nominated for three ACM Awards, including Female Vocalist of the Year; winning the ACM for Album of the Year. Kacey’s single “Biscuits” as did “Follow Your Arrow”, came to rave reviews. Her June 2015 album Pageant Material debuted at number one on the Billboard country charts.
Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real is based in California and call their music “Cowboy Hippie Surf Rock.” The group consists of Willie Nelson’s son, Lukas Nelson (vocals/guitar), Anthony Logerfo (drums), Corey McCormick (bass), and Tato Melgar (percussion). The band’s first EP “Live Beginnings” contained live tracks recorded off the soundboard at the world famous Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA. Lukas and Promise of the Real have become well known in their own right with their multi-genre influences in live concerts and heard on every track with a diverse collection of sounds and styles.
The band played on Neil Young’s album The Monsanto Years and the protest song “A Rock Star Bucks a Coffee Shop” which is the single from the album. In 2015, the band, alongside Lukas’s brother Micah Nelson, became Canadian musician Neil Young’s backing band on his The Monsanto Years tour.
In 2011, Austin City Limits moved production to ACL Live at the Moody Theater, located at 310 Willie Nelson Blvd., Austin, Texas. The full-time music venue and high definition, state-of-the-art production facility has a 2700-seat capacity and a direct fiber connection to KLRU’s home on The University of Texas campus. The move to the Moody Theater has also expanded audience capacity, so more fans can participate in ACL tapings.
