Thursday night action in Toronto, Canada, at the 2015 Pan American Games (boxing) saw American flyweight Antonio Vargas (Kissimmee, Fla.) in a tough battle versus David Jimenez Rodriguez (Costa Rica), Vargas earning the 2-1 split decision victory, advancing the 18 years-old Vargas to the gold medal bout against Cuban Olympian and 2011 Pan American Games silver medalist Yosbany Veitia, on Saturday night.
Super heavyweight, Cam F. Awesome (Lenexa, Kansas) lost a close 2-1 split decision to Cuban foe, Lenier Pero, in the first Pan Am Games for Awesome, him coming home with the bronze medal.
2012 Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields (Flint, Mich.) is the only American boxer competing in the first day of final round competition on Friday. Shields takes on Yenebier Guillen of the Dominican Republic for the middleweight championship in the final bout of Friday’s action. 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Marlen Esparza (Houston, Texas) battles home nation boxer Mandy Bujold of Canada in Saturday’s final round competition at the Oshawa Sports Centre in Toronto.
