Being ship’s captain is certainly a fantasy for many a child, and Costa Cruises can bring it closer to reality, if only for a day. The Captain for a Day program, where kids can get the feel for what a captain does, is being offered on the Costa Diadema and Costa Fascinosa.
“Kids get excited when they see the captain and officers walking around our ships and many say they may want to be a cruise ship captain when they grow up,” said Scott Knutson, vice president, sales and marketing, for Costa Cruises North America. “With the Captain for a Day program they’ll get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look into the role the master fulfills onboard, learn a few tricks of the trade and enjoy an experience unlike anything else they’ve ever done while at sea.”
Those participating will start the day off by putting on a captain’s uniform and progress through a series of activities that will give them a feel for what a captain does. They’ll tour the ship, be shown how signal flags are used, learn nautical terms and be shown how important maps and a compass are. At day’s end, they’ll sit down to dinner with the ship’s real master at his personal table in the main dining room.
There are several levels of involvement for the program with different perks (like keeping the captain’s coat worn during the training) and different pricing. It’s best to check the Costa Cruises website for more details www.costacruise.com or by reading more on the Costa Cruises’ Facebook page: Captain for a Day.
During our 60-plus cruises, we’ve had the opportunity to speak with many of the captains, and we always try to ask each one if they ever thought they would ever become a captain of a cruise ship. Most admit they did not, but all seem to hint that they had the fantasy of being at the helm of a ship sailing to distant ports. Maybe you can put that spark into a child you know. Costa Cruises will be more than willing to help.
