Josh Duggar, from the reality TV show “19 Kids and Counting,” molested at least five young children, including family members, when he was 14. Radar Online, May 22, 2015, said that even though Josh Duggar issued an apology, many are not letting his actions pass without some serious consequences. The show is Christian based, but they buried this secret for years since 2002. US Weekly reported that the Duggars reported the incident to Arkansas police years later, but Judge Stacey Zimmerman signed for the offense report from 2006 to be expunged. They “destroyed any and all copies of records” on the alleged case of Josh molesting five girls. Apparently, a state trooper handled the case but nothing ever happened. Years later, that same trooper went to jail for child porn. Oprah Winfrey allegedly learned about the oldest Duggar molesting young girls through an email in 2006. The email also contained information that Jim Bob and Michelle covered it up. Oprah’s staff emailed the child abuse hotline.
When the news became public, Josh posted an apology on Facebook. “Twelve years ago, as a young teenager I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret. I hurt others, including my family and close friends. I confessed this to my parents who took several steps to help me address the situation. We spoke with the authorities where I confessed my wrongdoing and my parents arranged for me and those affected by my actions to receive counseling.” Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar said, “When Josh was a young teenager, he made some very bad mistakes and we were shocked.”
The Duggars are a high profile Christian family. Josh resigned from his position with the Family Research Council when the child molestation news became public knowledge. TLC cancelled “19 Kids and Counting” and removed the shows from the air. According to the many posts on Facebook, fans are happy that they pulled the show of TLC. Too many, child molestation is an unforgivable act, but there were a few supporters. In one Facebook group, someone posted, “He was young and admitted a wrong. They need to stop and leave them alone. How on earth are they going to support everyone without being paid for that show.” Of course, someone said that the Duggars could get a job to support their large family. Another posted, “still I don’t know many teens who did not do something really stupid at sometime during their teen years. not too many of use are pure enough to be able to throw stones.” However, some posters had been victims of child molestation and they had no sympathy for the Duggars. One person wrote, “molesting is not something stupid, it’s a major crime. A crime that took his parents a year to report. His parents told the authorities that Josh and his sisters got counceling but they didn’t. I know what it’s like to be a young child and be molested at that age by a member of your family and having to live in the same house as them. If he had skipped school or something I could give him a pass . . .”
Another wrote, “ANYBODY that molests a child deserves every bad thing that happens to them 1000 times over. There just isn’t anything that can possibly happen to them that is bad enough. Anybody who helps protect a person who has molested a child deserves the same as the molestor. I absolutely do NOT understand why people think that a person who harms a child should ever be allowed anywhere near a child again. I don’t understand how anybody can think that because it was in the past it should be forgiven and forgotten. Harming a child in any way is absolutely unforgiveable in my opinion. I have trouble convincing myself that they even deserve God’s forgiveness. I had never formed an opinion about the Duggar family until this came out. How on earth could those “parents” think that all should be forgiven because their son came to them and confessed?”
What do you think should happen? Are they taking the Christian view of, confession and God’s forgiveness, as a way to get get past it with no regard to the victims. Do you think his apology came too late and they are just trying to save themselves and their TV show. Post your thoughts below in the comments section.
