From performing in local Chicago churches to world platforms, eOne Entertainment’s Jonathan McReynolds is an example of a consummate singer and musician. What sets Jonathan apart from the rest is his uncanny ability to continue to be himself and not give in to the overwhelming temptations to musically sound like others. Jonathan’s faith, vision and maturity is manifested in every note and lyric on his new project. Tuesday, Sept. 8, he elaborated in an interview regarding his collaborations on his new album and what it took to bring his vision to fruition.
It is rare that an artist of any genre to seemingly pop up overnight and garner success like that of Jonathan McReynolds’. Realistically, Jonathan had put forth the effort, while he was a student at Columbia College in his dorm room in Chicago, setting his life experiences to music. When the opportunity presented itself, he was prepared to seize it. A lesson to the wise, opportunity waits for no one. Thus, it behooves one to be ready.
Since his debut album “Life Music,” Jonathan has matured as a man and musically. To pen lyrics to his previous songs “No Gray” and “Lovin Me,” there had to have been a depth of spirituality to accompany. Experience over time is what has deepened Jonathan’s life on many levels. With the experience came introspection, understanding and an outpouring. Thus, “Life Music: Stage Two” picks up from where his first album left off. A journal of sorts.
“If you wanna know where I am just listen to the album. It’s always true. It’s always authentic. It’s always genuine. It’s always exactly where me and the people around me were feeling…where we are. The pressure, the struggles, the joys, the high times…it’s all in there,” expressed Jonathan.
The successes he has seen since 2012 has not deterred his desire to further the kingdom. Being positioned on such a platform has increased his visibility and reach. Counting the cost, Jonathan obtained his Masters of Arts in Biblical Studies from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. Aligning his understanding of God’s word is paramount to chart ratings, even though those are great in their place.
Jonathan has collaborated with some of the music industry’s elite on his new project. There are some phenomenal artists featured, such as India.Arie, Israel Houghton and Chicago crooner Corey Barksdale. “Life Music: Stage Two” also welcomes several award winning producers, such as Warren Campbell, PJ Morton and Chuck Harmony. Guaranteed smashes are embedded on “Life Music: Stage Two.” More edginess and in your face lyrical content and musicianship. Jonathan takes out all stops to convey his thoughts musically. Exploration of more intensified music arrangements and texture. His sound has grown and is much fuller.
The addition of A-list names to his circle of “friends” is not to necessarily build a repertoire of “Who’s who,” however the development of friendship between him and India.Arie was that of mutual admiration and the commonality of like minds. “We think similarly. We have similar experiences. I definitely see a lot of parallels between how she came on the scene in R&B in the 90s and how I kind of come on the scene in Gospel… Similar experiences. Similar worries and concerns,” shares Jonathan on his friendship with India.Arie.
When like minds and visions collide the results can only be that of stratospheric success. Jonathan McReynolds’ “Life Music: Stage Two” is sure to meet all expectations and more.
