The Sprint Cup and Xfinity Series are both on the 0.533-mile Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend, competing in the Food City 300 Xfinity Series race on Friday night, August 21 and the Irwin Tools Night Race for the Sprint Cup Series on Saturday night, August 22. Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin will race in both races this weekend; Busch also raced in Wednesday night’s Camping World Truck Series race, finishing second in his own Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota Tundra.
Busch won’t have the chance to sweep the three races like he did in August 2010, but chances are he’ll have a good finish. In the Cup Series, where he’ll be in the No. 18 Skittles Toyota Camry, Busch has 12 top 10 finishes, including five wins, in 20 starts. Last year was sub-par for Busch, who finished 29th and 36th; his last win came in spring 2011. In the Xfinity Series, Busch has 17 top 10 finishes, including seven wins, in 21 starts at Bristol; in last year’s two starts, he started second and won in the spring and won the pole and finished second in August. He’ll be in the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota Camry Friday night.
Hamlin, in the No. 11 FedEx Ground Toyota on Saturday night, has eight top 10 finishes in 19 starts, including a win in August 2012; he finished 26th in the spring race. In Xfinity Series competition, Hamlin has two top 10 finishes in seven starts, finishing 31st in the spring race, his first start since 2008. Hamlin will be in the No. 20 Hisense Toyota on Friday night.
Matt Kenseth, in the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota, has 20 top 10 finishes, including four wins, in 31 starts at Bristol; his last win came in the spring race this year. Carl Edwards, in the No. 19 STANLEY Toyota, has nine top 10s in 22 starts, including three wins; his last win came in the spring 2014 race.
Daniel Suarez joins Busch and Hamlin in the Xfinity Series race, driving the No. 18 Juniper Networks Toyota. Suarez finished second in his first career Bristol Xfinity Series start in the spring after three previous starts in the K&N Pro Series East yielded a best-finish of 15th. Suarez’s Truck Series start for KBM on Wednesday night ended in a 30th-place finish after early-race contact and overheating issues.
