Jim Carrey’s ex-girlfriend, Cathriona White, committed suicide by drug overdose Sept. 28. Carrey and White met in 2012, dated for a few months and then broke up. They got back together in May 2015, but then split again in September.
Cathriona, 28, left behind a suicide note, where she referenced her recent break-up with Carrey, TMZ reported Sept. 29. White, who had worked as a stylist and makeup artist, tweeted an ominous message Sept. 24, the day she and Jim reportedly broke up.
“Signing off Twitter, I hope I have been a light to my nearest and dearest,” Cathriona tweeted. In a statement, Jim, 53, expressed shock and sadness at his ex-girlfriend’s sudden suicide:
“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona. She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled. My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt.”
Carrey previously revealed he has suffered from clinical depression for much of his life. Jim, who was diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) as a child, said growing up impoverished with an unemployed dad and a sick mom fueled his desire to make people laugh.
“I had a sick mom, man. I wanted to make her feel better,” Carrey told CNN. “Basically, she laid in bed and took a lot of pain pills and I wanted to make her feel better. I used to go in there and do impressions of praying mantises, and weird things. I’d bounce off the walls and throw myself down the stairs to make her feel better.”
Carrey, the youngest of four children, dropped out of school at 16 after his accountant dad lost his job at age 51. At that point, things went downhill for the entire family. “My family kinda hit the skids,” Jim recounted. “We were experiencing poverty at that point.”
Carrey continued: “We all got a job, where the whole family had to work as security guards and janitors. And I just got angry. I was angry at the world for doing that to my father. I wanted to bash somebody’s head in, basically.”
Jim’s anxiety and depression motivated him to be successful so he could lift himself out of poverty and improve his life.
People need motivation to do anything. I don’t think human beings learn anything without desperation. Desperation is a necessary ingredient to learning anything, or creating anything. Period. If you ain’t desperate at some point, you ain’t interesting.”
Carrey said he used antidepressants to manage his depression, but now relies on natural supplements. “I think Prozac and things like that are very valuable to people for short periods of time,” said Jim. “But I believe if you’re on them for an extended period of time, you never get to the problem.”
