Jennifer Hudson is no stranger to gracing the stage and wowing fans with her amazing voice and showcasing her talent as an actress in films like Dream Girls, The Secret Life of Bees and Black Nativity. Now, according to People and the The Voice Online, Jennifer Hudson is preparing to shine in the Broadway reproduction of The Color Purple and is also in conversation with the director of the upcoming biopic on the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.
In an article released by People on Aug 24 the news of Jennifer Hudson’s broadway debut to star as “Shug Avery” was revealed. During an interview with the magazine and Entertainment Weekly, Hudson stated that she is very nervous to play the popular character because the book, written by Alice Walker, as well as the film is one of her favorites. She refers to the book, film and broadway production as “a timeless piece of American culture” with characters, a storyline and a message that is “so honest.” However, The American Idol winner is up to the challenge of taking on the role and is ready to mimic that same honesty in her portrayal of the character.
Taking on a role of this importance does create some anxiety for the “If This Isn’t Love” singer. She explained during the exclusive interview that she manages her nerves by simply allowing herself to be nervous and embracing the “butterflies.” “I try to feel the butterflies before any big performance as much as I can,” she explains. “That sensation makes me feel alive and it keeps me on my toes. For me, nerves have always been a good thing, they make the experience exciting,” she revealed to People and EW.
The production’s previews will begin in November and opening night is set for Dec 10 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. The revival of this production is under the direction of John Doyle who Hudson describes as “a brilliant director and interpreter.” The songstress believes that it’s his ability to “shift the focus to the emotion of the story” that will make the production great.
John Doyle is not the only talented powerhouse in entertainment that Hudson seems to be connecting with on a professional level. As of Aug 24 The Voice Online reported that Jennifer Hudson is in early discussion with Scott Bernstein, the producer behind the current box office hit, “Straight Outta Compton (the story of rap group N.W.A); to take on the lead role in his current project.
According to the article Bernstein is producing the biopic of the legendary Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin and has his sights set on Hudson to bring the character and Franklin’s story to life. The story will focus on the good and the bad of Franklin’s personal relationships, and of course, her music and career. Nothing has been finalized and is still only in the early stages, with no official release date.
