American actress Jennifer Beals has gone from “Flashdance” to facing a firestorm of criticism from animal lovers in Canada for leaving her female German-shepherd (type) dog inside a hot car while making a quick stop to pick up her laundry in Vancouver.
According to reports, Beals had left the windows of her Ford Escape open a few inches and was only gone about 5 minutes when she was accosted by an pair of irate passerbys concerned for the animal’s welfare. Although Beals told the strangers everything was fine, and thanked them for their concern, she was later taken to task by British SPCA for using poor judgment.
“Leaving the windows down only a few inches in this temperature (said to be near 80°F) wouldn’t necessarily create the type of cooling effect that would ever be sufficient,” stated a spokesman for the group.
She later faced more ire from others after video footage of Beals talking to one of the strangers was posted online. Beals, however, insists that she never meant to put the dog in danger, telling Us Weekly, “I have loved dogs my whole life. They’ve been in my life since the day I was born. Every dog I’ve had has been a rescue. I would never ever jeopardize an animal’s safety. Ever.”
She went on to say that the morning in question was “a cool 73 degrees. and that she and others were “actually wearing jackets, as well as the fact that the vehicle was visible to her at all times,” and wondered why 2 strangers had gathered around her car to take pictures of her dog thinking at first it was because her “baby was so gorgeous..”
Although she has since been in more than 50 films (in cluding the “Bride” with Sting, and with Denzel Washington in Devil in a Blue Dress, ), Jennifer Beals is still best known for her breakout role as Alexandra “Alex” Owens in the 1983 film “Flashdance.” She has also appeared in numerous TV shows including Lie to Me, “ and “The Chicago Code..” She is currently in Vancouver to film episodes of the new TNT series “Proof.”
