GOP Presidential candidate Jeb Bush took another deep dive into the abyss in an interview with The Huffington Post as reported on Monday. In that interview, Bush was asked if he would have killed Adolf Hitler as a baby if provided the chance to do so. Bush’s response was, “Hell yeah, I would!” Bush then added: “You gotta step up, man!”
As this commentator sees it, this latest “foot in the mouth” statement needs dissection. The GOP is the nation’s leading trumpeter of the “Pro Life” political agenda. The “Pro-Life” agenda is adamantly against abortion under any circumstances, even when the life of the mother is at stake. The Pro-Life Organization, with the assistance of the GOP, led the movement to defund Planned Parenthood, circulated videos of infant brain dissections, and spread rumors that Planned Parenthood is profiting from selling stem cells from aborted fetuses.
The underlying basis for the Pro-Life movement is that a child’s life begins at conception and that to abort a baby at any stage of the pregnancy is murder. On the surface, the Pro-Life agenda appears to be clear, concise and without hypocrisy.
But then Jeb Bush comes along. Bush also is Pro-Life and is against abortion and baby killing at any stage of the game, unless that baby is Adolf Hitler. So taken to its logical extreme, this argument by Bush is as follows: 1) A fertilized egg in the womb is a baby even before it is a fetus. 2) It is wrong to abort a baby after conception. 3) Any and all kinds of abortion should be outlawed. 4) Roe v. Wade, the controversial 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion, needs to be repealed. 5) On the other hand, it is alight to kill a baby that someday will grow up to be a vicious killer even though this baby has been born and is a fully, thriving, healthy human being.
Taken to the end of the continuum on which Bush has placed himself, this argument ends up being: It is alright to kill babies based on what you know they will do when they grow up. Take this argument just one step further and it ends up being: It is alright to kill babies based on what you presume they will do when they grow up!
Is Jeb really serious? He would kill a baby if he thought that it would grow up to be a Hitler? Would he look at a particular demographic of people and say that their babies need to be killed because they are going to grow up to be fascists? Is he the one who gets to decide whose babies are dangerous and whose babies are safe? Is he the one who decides which babies live and which ones die? Isn’t this what Hitler did to the Jews?
This sounds like mass genocide to this commentator. How could Bush forget the fact that babies’ personalities are formed on the basis of their environment and the love they receive within their environment? Why would Bush not even give the “Baby Hitler” a chance to be loved, nurtured and cared for properly within his environment? Is it possible that if he had been loved and nurtured properly, that the “Baby Hitler” never would have grown up to be the despotic, hate-filled dictator that he was? Would Bush really choose murder over giving that baby just as much of a chance to love and be loved as any other infant? Doesn’t every baby deserve that chance, no matter what?
This commentator would not be willing to take a chance on supporting a candidate who might lead this nation into creating a “select society” in which some babies are allowed to live and others are killed out of fear of what they might do when they grow up. Perhaps Bush and his Pro-Llife supporters need to re-think their position: Is it just the unborn babies in the womb who need protection? Really? As this commentator sees it, babies who have been born need as much love and protection as do those in the womb, especially from the likes of Jeb Bush and other marginal “select society” despots.
