Multi-GRAMMY Award nominated alternative rockers Jane’s Addiction rocked out during the annual Coors Light Carb Day concert at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) on Friday, May 22nd, 2015, on the Turn 4 Coors Light stage in the IMS infield. Appearing on a bill with O.A.R. and 38 Special, Jane’s Addiction brought their intense attitude, hitting concertgoers smack dab center mass with their unique in-your-face musical style, consummate musicianship, and provocative stage show; replete with added theatrics of scantily clad female dancers and what could only be described as two high-flying bondage/S&M girls hanging from wires with clamps attached directly to their skin while swinging above the band.
Perry Farrell, the band’s flamboyant founding member and lead vocalist, held court no matter where he was on stage. He was undeniably the center of attention. And then, there was the music. Yes, the music. In a set of nearly 45 minutes, Perry Farrell and Jane’s Addiction were a man and band of few words. Jane’s Addiction let their music do the talking. And fans were very appreciative of their music. And, it did not matter if you were a music fan or a race fan…you were literally both on this day. And, in such an historic location…on the grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The current Jane’s Addiction lineup of Perry Farrell, Vocals; Dave Navarro, Guitar; Stephen Perkins, Drums; and Chris Chaney, Bass; received loud boisterous cheers with each note of their first number Up the Beach. Farrell took a moment to find his voice. When he began to sing, it happened, like a vacuum cleaner sucking up everything in its way, all eyes were sort of pulled forward…glued to Farrell; a grip he held until he departed the stage after the last note of the band’s encore. Jane’s Addiction moved seamlessly into Whores which was well received. The combination of Perkins on drums and Chaney on bass was like a jackhammer hitting your head with every beat on Had a Dad. That jackhammer beat remained throughout their set. Fans assisted Farrell on vocals with Mountain Song and Navarro took a guitar solo. And, Navarro took a guitar solo in Pigs in Zen.
“F**k yeah!” uttered Farrell to loud fan appreciation. “That’s right! That’s Right!”
Ocean Size was next (with a Navarro guitar solo), followed by Three Days (with a Navarro guitar solo) and Stop.
“Thank you!” yelled Farrell as he and his bandmates departed the stage.
Jane’s Addiction returned to the stage for their encore. Farrell heard an Indy Racecar go by in the distance. “Eurrrow!” Farrell said while looking off into the direction from where the sound came. “I thought that was sound effects. That’s the real deal! Bad-ass!” The band then went into its encore, Been Caught Stealing, with fans yelling, screaming, clapping, and singing along. Then, it was all over.
Jane’s Addiction did provide an intense musical set. And, on a day that saw temperatures soar into the 80’s, some fans were a bit too aggressive and were escorted out by security during Jane’s Addiction. The 2015 Coors Light Carb Day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be remembered for its musical intensity.
