Brooklyn and Manhattan may have their fashion weeks, but Downtown Jamaica has ‘The Collections’, its annual fashion, food and music event. And June 6th marks its return.
Presented by the Jamaica Center Business Improvement District, ‘The Collections’ will feature fashions from four trend setting designer. Featured designer Onyx Noir, a local artist who hails from Jamaica Queens, is back for another year. Onyx Noir has shown collections internationally and has been featured in the fashion magazine Vogue. His evening and cocktail dresses have adorned celebrities like Mary J. Blige and Kate Moss. His past showings at the Jamaica Collection have wowed audiences with flair and finesse.
The events’ other featured designers will showcase haute couture in menswear, ladies fashions and ready to wear. The event will also feature the ever popular segment of ‘Fashions from The Ave’ which features looks from retail along Jamaica Avenue.
Fashion bloggers, trendsetters and hipsters from across the five boroughs have been past attendees at this red carpet event. Hip and trendy attendees become a central part of the event experience by fashionably displaying their own unique styles and taking part in the impromptu audience calls for fun.
In addition to the fashion and fun, food will be a partner in the event with southern, Caribbean and Latin delicacies catered from SWB Caterers and Lotta Empanada. Supplementing those cuisines will be a hosts of favorites, local brands and beverage samplings.
This is the fourth year that the Jamaica Center Business Improvement District is presenting the event. It is the third year that Noman Marketing is its producer.
“Trends start on Jamaica Avenue,” said Pearline Horne, Managing Partner of Nomad Marketing. “Major designers from around the world have pulled directly from Jamaica Avenue’s trends for their collections. As such, it is important that Downtown Jamaica has its place in any stable of fashion weeks.”
With the pending revitalization of Downtown Jamaica by City Hall, the timing to solidify Downtown Jamaica and grow its Jamaica Collections brand and artist showcase, couldn’t be more advantageous.
“The arts are influential and it is equally important that artists have venues in which to showcase their works and talents,” said Pearline. “Where artists go, economic development follows. It is important for Downtown Jamaica to lead in this effort because it is so influential.”
This year there is a $25 admission ticket in contrast to the free admission of previous years. Promoters and sponsors, including Resorts World Casino New York City and NYEDC, say the new ticket price ensures a VIP experience for all participants.
The Jamaica Collections will take place at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center. The reception and tasting begins at 7P. The fashion show starts at 8P. Styling and profiling takes place all night long!
