Melbourne, Florida (May 25, 2015) – As everyone expected the 2015 Jacksonville Kayak Fishing Classic hit another home run. The Classic started on May 15th at the Ramallah Club of Jacksonville with the Captain’s Meeting and ended May 16th late in the evening when the awards ceremony ended. Over $80,000 in prizes and awards were given out.
According to Mike “ AKA Kayak Mike” Kogan, this year’s Catch, Photograph and Release (CPR) tournament raised over $40,000 for the Down Syndrome Association of Jacksonville and the North East Florida Chapter of Heroes on the Water. Big thanks goes out to the 360 plus kayak anglers of all ages who fished, the volunteers, the friends and the angler’s family members who made the Classic possible. The weather was perfect where kayak anglers checked in 12 slams, 50 Redfish, 32 Trout, and 29 Flounder. Wow, what a day on the water! The 50 Redfish beat last year’s 42 fish that were checked in.
As the Classic has matured over these past 10 years, the use of social media and technology has enhanced the angler’s experience. The 321Fish.com on-line check-in system was used again to check-in fish from the water via a smart phone.
As in the past seven years, Columbia Sportswear was the event title sponsor. Each year the first paid 350 anglers received a great angler’s bag. This year’s bag was top shelf. This year’s bag contained the following:
• Columbia Sportswear Fishing Shirt,
• 2 Raffle Tickets,
• 321Fish.com Measuring Ruler,
• Costa Visor,
• Costa Cleaning Cloth,
• Costa Fathom Sunglasses Retainer,
• Costa Cozie,
• Tsunami Swimbaits,
• Slayer Lures,
• DOA Lures,
• Daiichi Hooks,
• Sea-Lect Design Safety Whistle,
• Dicks Sporting Goods Kerchain and
• Watermans Sun Cream.
I have attended the Classic many times since 2007. Having won a 13 foot Ocean Kayak Prowler kayak during the 2008 raffle, I love the raffle. This is where most of the donations come from to enable the Classic to raise the money for charity the Classic does. Another big thanks goes out to all of the 60 plus fishing industry sponsors who donated tackle, rods and reels and other great angling gear. Check out the slide show for the list. Some of the national brands that returned as sponsors were Ocean Kayaks, Costa Del Mar, Jackson Kayaks, Wilderness Systems, Malibu Kayaks, Emotion Kayaks, Native Watercraft, Hobie Kayaks, NuCanoe, Native Watercraft, Tsunami, Power-Pole, and KayakFishingSupplies.Com.
And according to Kayak Mike, Northeast Florida’s kayak and fishing retailers led by Strike-Zone Fishing, Black Creek Outfitters, All Wet Sports, and Dick’s Sporting Goods all supported the Classic.
