This is about the time for planning our summer vacation. This year wouldn’t it be nice and economical to take our pets with us. Although boarding them is a very suitable answer to the question of what about the pets while we are away; taking them along offers another side of vacation which can be quite enjoyable.
First of all there has been a recent bloom in the requests for accommodations including pets. Due to the demand and not wanting to offend any prospective customers, we find many of those providing accommodations are very happy to have our friend. Please notice ‘not little’ friend just friend; this is because many places now accept large pets as well. However, we should use some discretion, no horses unless we are going to a ranch. The larger hotel/motel chains now supply special amenities for our pets when traveling, anything from a toy to a blanket or treats. The pets are greeted like a long lost guest and we have the opportunity to feel very pleased about and proud of our pets. A caution is to be sure we carry a veterinary certificate with us, showing the pet has had all shots and is in good health. (It is always helpful to check with our veterinarian to be sure the area we are traveling to be clear of pet illnesses. No better way to ruin our vacation than for our pet to get Dog Flu.
Always a good idea to take along a special item from home with the scent of them, and also the family, along with their special treat helping to make this an especially enjoyable trip. Special consideration is important to give about kenneling our pet while we enjoy a day at an amusement park or special event. Give special consideration to the people our pet will be around. For instance a ‘Family Reunion’ can be very difficult for our pet, being over stimulated and no place for them to get away from all the new people and places. Taking along a small bag of necessities for our pet such as comb and brush, their nail clippers, scissors to cut out those burrs, special ointments or treatments for chronic conditions, is always a good idea.
There are many special items which will make this time together especially enjoyable. Disposable cat boxes suggest no need to pack litter; Thunder Shirts for dog provide for a relaxing experience for all; portable fences or large wire crates are very useful for most all pets of any size; all these and many other items you might want along can be found in various sizes, colors, and enjoyable treats are at www.petco.com or www.petsmart.com.
This year you can have a true family vacation and have the whole family along. Of importance is should we be planning a camping trip be sure to check the occupancy permits for having a pet with us. There are special amenities frequently provided by the National Parks and certainly by the adjacent businesses, KOA’s and private camping parks. We will want to take plenty of pictures for the 2016 calendars, a slide show for friends now and to remind ourselves of how much fun this was.
