Listen up frugal friends! The time has come for you to let go of what you probably hold near and dear to your heart; your cable. It is an overpriced bill that in the time of new technology no longer has a place in your frugal lifestyle. Before your clinch your fist and hold onto your programming for dear life please take a moment to understand how you have been sucked into the never ending vortex of paying for entertainment that you can either receive for free or almost free.
The average cable bill can be very costly. For some depending upon what channel selection is attractive, monthly payments can soar into the hundreds. It will take a moment for some to grab onto the new concept that is being introduced here but what would you say if you could spend far less to watch primarily the same thing? It is a given that basic programming is free. We have forgotten that. Certain areas of Philadelphia have approximately 10 -14 local channels with very strong signal strength. These channels include but are not limited to CBS, ABC, NBC, PBS, FOX, CW, TNB, Univision, QVC, HSN, ION and Telemundo. Not to mention that many of these stations broadcast in [wait for it] High Definition, HD. Yes! To receive these channels on your new or not so new fangled television all you need is a good ol’ new fashioned antenna. Yes, it is an oxymoron. Conceptually, antennas are old fashioned. We think of the old rabbit ears that we moved about. Nowadays antennas are new improved, equipped for HD, very sleek, and plug right into your TV. An antenna cost you anywhere from $9.99 and up; one-time cost that will give you free programming. You can purchase one at a local Target, Best Buy or Walmart. No need for basic cable.
So what about special programming; those shows that you just must see but are on special designated cable stations? Internet programming is your answer. With the help from Google Chromecast. Google Chromecast is a device that cast the entertainment you love from your favorite device to your HDTV. Chromecast works with iPhone®, iPad®, or Android devices, plus Chromebook, Mac®, and Windows® laptops. It is a slice of programming heaven for a one time purchase of $39.99. Chromecast will allow you to choose from over 200,000 movies and TV shows, 30 million songs, sport events and [yes] gaming. Simply plug Chromecast you’re your HDMI port on your television and you now can cast programming from apps like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Pandora, Google Play and hundreds of thousands more. Yes, some of these apps have monthly fees but none as high as your local cable company. Hulu has just made a special arrangement with Showtime so for an additional couple of dollars a month you can watch all of Showtimes programming at your discretion whenever you would like. Wow! Who needs cable when you can do that?
So let us dissect this for a minute. For a one time fee of about 10 bucks for an antenna an 40 bucks for a Chromecast you can receive continuous programming? Even if you pay $10 a month for Netflix and $10 for Hulu [and that is a high estimate] you are spending about $20 – $25 a month to receive MORE than you received when you were patronizing the local cable company. Do you see that it is frugally beneficial to walk away? The cable companies do not want you to know that the options that they are providing are now easily and readily available to you for pennies on the dollars they charge you; if that. It is up to you to step into the new frugal way of being entertained and say goodbye to big bills and hello to more money in your pocket. It is time.
