What is the most powerful four letter word? Depending on our faith, one might say that it is love. Love is very powerful. What is the most hateful four letter word? Should the suffix “ism” be added to it, one might say that it is race. Next to sex, it is the most uncomfortable subject for people to talk about – for some people it is harder to discuss than sex. Why? It is because we are all so very diverse with a diversity of ideas and ideals, personalities, religious and separate views on what is moral and what is good or bad that we forget that we are all different. Difference becomes a bad thing instead of what God intended it to be. Let’s use an example. Think of the last time you were at an art exhibit, viewing works of art that were all similar would have been so very boring. When was the last time you took in a show at an aquarium? What if all of the shows were exactly the same and you viewed all of the same three fish and there were none that looked differently? Would you return sometime in the future to see that show again? Lastly, what if upon visiting the show you find that every single species you encountered was the same, looked the same, acted the same etc.; would you have even bothered to make that long trip to the zoo (or the botanical gardens), even for the sake of the children? Now take that answer and apply it to what God may have been thinking. Creating us with such diverse attributes on the outside. Our creator might have been thinking the same thing about the animals, the flowers and the plants that were created – that such a mixture would be interesting and appealing to the eye and to the senses.
We are all shaped differently and have different personalities yet if we were to be put underneath a magnifying glass we become much more similar than we are different. Most of us learned the differences and the similarities of humanity in biology (and other science classes).
The best example might be credited to the delight of any man – young or old-throughout life, The male sex will learn that the opposite sex comes in all shapes and sizes but the average male will claim to not understand not one. That being said, most men and perhaps most women, are all the same in that we are all a mystery to the opposite sex. Perhaps the same is true about different races – although we might be diverse and perhaps complex to those who look or sound differently than we do, we basically have been designed just the same.
Diversity makes life more exciting! Now isn’t that much easier to talk about? Wait a minute – did we just have a conversation about of all things – race?
