With the help of a brain dead, complacent, and silently complicit American journalistic establishment, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) was in Birmingham and Huntsville, Alabama Sunday, as part of a Southern states bus tour, in a continuing attempt to perhaps perpetrate the greatest hoax in American history; which would be that of circumventing the Article II requirements for presidential eligibility, and becoming the President of the United States.
There is no question that the Canadian-born Cruz is a legally born citizen of the United States. What has yet to be determined is whether someone whose U.S. citizenship is entirely owing and completely dependent upon a legislative immigration and naturalization act of Congress is a “natural born citizen” (whose citizenship, as delineated in the 14th Amendment, is independent of anything that legislation has done or can do); as Article II of the U.S. Constitution requires for presidential eligibility.
The fact that he is running for the Republican nomination against Donald Trump, who established whatever political bona fides he can claim by being the birther-in-chief in his insistence upon the production/release of President Barack Obama’s long-form birth certificate as proof that Mr. Obama was born in the U.S. and thus a natural born citizen—but who has said little, and is saying nothing, about the Canadian-born Cruz’s eligibility—is yet another thing that the so-called liberal media establishment ignores in their headlong all-out race to the bottom of journalistic ethics, skills, and integrity.
In that he has gotten this far unchallenged on this score, whether Cruz is ever elected or not, the possible hoax has already undergone a successful commencement. The presidential precedent is possibly in process. After so much money has been raised by Cruz and his supporters, and since he has already participated in the first GOP debate, the so-called liberal media establishment will now be too embarrassed to ever pursue this independently. They don’t want to look like ‘birthers’ at this point, even in a case that may very well be legitimate—if ever legally challenged.
As it happens, Mr. Obama was actually born in Honolulu, Hawaii; but had to release his long-form birth certificate to prove it (a certificate of live birth and a contemporaneous birth announcement in the local newspaper in August, 1961 notwithstanding). Yet during the President’s birther controversy, not even his most partisan, ardent, and vociferous supporters offered the argument that it made no constitutional difference if he had been born in Kenya or Indonesia, because he would have been an American citizen by virtue of his American mother’s citizenship, and thus a natural born citizen—because it was understood and accepted that a legally born citizen and a natural born citizen are not necessarily the same thing.
In 2015 however, everything is somehow different. Just like the typewriters that American journalists once used, journalism is now an American anachronism.
