Toca Boca is an innovative app company that is leading the mobile market in the genre of children’s games. To date, Toca Boca has released 29 apps that have been downloaded in 215 countries worldwide resulting in more than 100 million total downloads to date. According to an official press release:
Toca Boca apps focus on stimulating kids’ imaginations so that they can play and have fun in a safe digital environment. With offices in San Francisco, Stockholm and New York, Toca Boca is part of The Bonnier Group, a family ¬owned business that includes newspapers, magazines, television, cinemas and digital media.
Dedicated to “open play” and gender neutral games, Toca Boca has released several apps since its launch in 2011 such as “Toca Life City” where players could go to a grocery store, a loft, a food court and even a pet shop among other things. In October 2015 the company announced its latest feature “Toca Life School.”
“Toca Life: School” is the third app in the popular Toca Life series, and it enables kids to take full control of what happens to the diverse cast of 32 students, staff and pets: They decide what activities take place, when the recess bell rings and even what to serve for lunch! Like the other apps, “Toca Life: School” has no scripted scenarios or rules. With five exciting locations, kids can have endless outdoor adventures on the playground, conduct chemistry experiments in the school, hold music lessons or put on a rock show in the youth club, start a food fight in the cafeteria, or just hang out at the house. They can prank friends with stink bombs and send love notes in the classroom–and there’s always time for recess, too.
This app contains 32 new characters of various ages and backgrounds and even several kinds of pets with unique expressions. It also has iconic “school house” elements including a functioning whiteboard, working fire extinguisher and sprinklers. The app is also interactive in that it has the ability to screen-record up to a two ¬minute video: both video of the screen and a kid’s voice. It boasts a content channel, “Life Weekly,” which shares fun stories, fan art and cool tips about the Toca Life series provided the app has access to the internet.
“Toca Life: School” leaves the door open as to which grades the school houses but given that there is a dormitory feature it is entirely possible that the school is actually a college campus. This is a fun twist considering that many young children do dream of attending college one day. Of all the locations in this series, the “Youth Club” is certainly the most fun with arcade games, music instruments, pool tables and even Halloween costumes to play around with.
Overall, I give this app 5 out of 5 stars and am happy to report that it is a very enjoyable addition to the Toca Boca world. To learn more, visit the official Toca Boca website, Facebook and Twitter.
