Known as “Big Head” from HBO’s huge hit series Silicon Valley, the hilarious actor Josh Brener spent a few minutes with me at a recent HBO Event in Denver, CO. This Houston, TX born actor is best known for his roles on the film The Internship, The Condom Killer, and of course HBO’s comedy gem Silicon Valley. Big Bang Theory enthusiasts will remember Brener from his guest role as Stuart Bloom’s friend and part time co-worker Dale in two episodes. Silicon Valley airs on Sundays right after Game of Thrones which speaks to what an incredible show it is. The ups and downs of Pied Piper’s big win against Hooli to the end of season two left us with a cliffhanger; leaving the Pied Piper CEO (Thomas Middleditch) out of the picture. Even Firefox founder Blake Ross could not take the hiatus any longer and has written a script for season three and posting it on Facebook. Silicon Valley is set to premiere April 2016.
Q. Silicon Valley is the freshest comedy to hit cable TV. Thank you to HBO for airing it because it allows the series to push the envelope. It just makes for so much of a better show. How do you feel about HBO?
A. “Thomas Middleditch, our fearless leader in the cast said when we were shooting the pilot he referred to getting to be on a show on HBO as the ‘white whale’. And to me that is the best description. When you’re an actor all you want to do is be on something that is good and interesting and amazing, and HBO makes those things. It’s like the ‘white whale’; and Disneyland.”
Q. What can fans expect for next season?
A. “Use of swear words, bodily fluids continue to be involved, lots of computers; how about that? Vague enough? It’s just so hard. We’ve only seen the scripts for two episodes so far so it’s very early…what can I spoil without spoiling? They guys continue to think that they’re going to succeed and continue to be surprised. How about that; is that vague enough?”
Q. Fans always want to know if there are any shenanigans and pranks on the set.
A. “There are exclusively shenanigans and pranks on the set. One of the interesting things about being on the show it is the best improvisers and comedians on the planet. I mean, Thomas Middleditch, T.J. Miller, Kumail Nanjiani, and Zach Woods all come from this incredible comedy background, so everything they say is fucking hilarious. And Mike Judge and Alec Berg are incredible writers and they also let those guys go. Zach would just say things that are funny. Each time Zach opens his mouth it’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard in my life. There’s just all kinds of madness and silliness and fun, and fun, and fun.”
Q. Comic books? Table top games? What kind of nerdiness are you in to?
A. “I’m going to speak more to the other guys because Thomas is a huge D&D guy, Kumail and Martin are huge gamer/video games nerds, T.J. Miller is a philosophy nerd who’s huge in to Nietzsche, and I am really fantasy football nerd.”
Q. Do you have any “hidden talents” that you can share with your fans? The quirkier the better?
A. “I play a pretty nasty mouth trumpet.
(he breaks in to an epic Louis Armstrong “mouth trumpet”.
