Dorothy Thompson: I’m always interested in how authors come up with ideas to write their books. How did you come up with the idea to write Laguna Nights?
Kaira Rouda: My friend is married to a former star of Laguna Beach: The Real OC, one of the first reality TV series. We started talking about what it was like to have your life always captured in high school. I live in Laguna Beach, and there is still a lot of talk about the show and its effects. For me, the story was all of these things and more: what happens to love with the pressure of television and celebrity. That’s the starting point for Madison and Josh’s story.
D.T.: What draws you to the contemporary romance genre?
K.R.: The happily ever after, of course!
D.T.: How was the process of writing it for you? Did you hit bumps along the way or did it pretty well go the way you wanted?
K.R.: It went pretty much the way I expected. The only bump was towards the end…but I can’t tell you what it was! It all worked out. I was worried about Josh’s reaction to Laura; I was happy he behaved like a gentleman.
D.T.: Are you involved in any social media and, if so, what are your favorites?
K.R.: I’m on Facebook: Kaira Rouda Books, Twitter @KairaRouda and Instagram @KairaRouda. I love Pinterest, too. I like them all, for different reasons. Instagram and Pinterest for the visuals, Facebook for the deeper connection with readers and Twitter, because it’s like a cocktail party where you can chat with fascinating people from all over the world!
D.T.: If you could give one publishing tip to aspiring authors, what would that be?
K.R.: Never give up. Be true to yourself. Keep writing, keep reading.
D.T.: What’s next for you?
K.R.: Laguna Heights, another Laguna Beach stand-alone story will be out in September as part of a special boxed set. I’m also part of Carly Phillips’ Dare to Love Kindle World release in September. My story is The Celebrity Dare. I’m excited for the fall.
D.T.: Where can we find you on the web?
K.R.: Thanks so much for having me! Please visit my website and sign up for my sporadic, but fun filled newsletter: You can also visit me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.
