Four friends stumble into a deal too good to refuse. But when the investment goes bad, they learn that part of their funding came from a notoriously ruthless crime boss… and it’s payback time. Now, they must successfully kidnap a family member of a rival kingpin in order to erase the life-threatening debt. In way over their heads, if they can complete the assigned task without screwing up, they just might escape with their lives. John Travolta (Pulp Fiction), Michael Pitt (“Boardwalk Empire”) Dan Stevens (“Downtown Abbey”) and Edi Gathegi (The Blacklist, X-Men First Class, Crank) star in this action-packed thriller about insider trading, the Mob and an unrelenting quest for vengeance.
Edi Gathegi sat down for an interview with Celebrity Examiner Jae Monique to discuss the movie and his character.
Jae Monique: What were your initial reactions when you read the script?
Edi Gathegi: I want to see this movie…If I read a good script, I want to see the movie. If I show up on set and we did great on scene, I want to see that scene. Like, I can’t wait for them to do the quick edits. I want to be on the screen and I want to be in the movie theater with my friends and popcorn, and I want to be watching that movie. I’m always so excited to go to set and so excited to get working on a project.
JM: What’s the name of your character and what’s your character like?
Gathegi: Marquis is a dude that is caught up in a crime family. He’s a victim of his environment. If he was raised in a good environment he might have turned out a different way. But at the same time, you are responsible for the decisions you make as a man and he’s responsible for the position he’s in… I don’t think Marquis is a bad guy I think Marquis is a guy who’s in a situation and he’s navigating his way through a situation the best that he can.
JM: What was it like working with John Travolta and the other cast members?
Gathegi: John Travolta is a movie star that everybody knows… He’s the kind of movie star who is generous and humble. He knows that he’s a movie star and shows up as a professional, so he’s cool. The other actors, they are all fantastic. Some of them I knew before hand and some I met on set. They do terrific work and they’re bringing their A game… Jackie Earle Haley’s genius is that he casts good people who are great actors.
JM: It seems like there’s a lot of humor in this movie. What is the feel of this movie?
Gathegi: I think the humor comes from the situation..the people who are in certain situations that are desperately fighting for the objective, and in turn its unbelievably comical, like ‘I can’t believe I just heard that’ or ‘I totally understand what it’s like to be in that situation.’
JM: What can the audience expect from the movie?
Gathegi: Be entertained. I think it’s a really good story and it’s well-told. The audience will feel like they just went on a magic mountain and on a really cool roller coaster. I think some of the best movies….even the most dramatic movies have a humor to them and I think that’s what Jackie did very well in this movie; to capture how funny something like this could be.
JM: What other projects are you working on?
Gathegi: I joined season 3 of The Blacklist and I’m causing chaos on the show. It’s a fun show and it’s a good character, and fans are loving to hate me right now. Into the Bad Lands and starring in a new independent thriller next week and it comes out sometime next year.
