Three Sacramento natives made it to the top of the world, and are back in town this weekend with proof that not all superstars are human. The formerly homeless felines – now international champions – will cheer on other local kittens and cats who are competing against professionals in the Jazzy Cats’ “Fabulous 50s Paw Hop.”
The fun, fast-paced three-day event is an internationally sanctioned cat show featuring exotic breeds, pedigreed felines and award-winning competitors from across the West coast. Among the challengers will be 10 homeless cats and kittens from Sacramento’s Front Street Animal Shelter.
The cat show is organized by Jazzy Cats, local arm of The International Cat Association (TICA). TICA recognizes more than 60 purebred cat breeds for competitions, and is also the world’s largest registry of household pet (HHP) cats and kittens. Non-pedigreed felines of every color, age or mixed breed can be registered as HHP. Registered HHP felines can compete internationally just as purebred felines do, and their owners take it just as seriously. This weekend’s 50s Paw Hop will include championship contests for HHP cats and kittens, as well as competitions between their purebred counterparts.
There will be cash prizes for guests wearing the best 1950s costumes, so lace up your saddle shoes and come to the show.
Cats from Front Street have proven to be big winners in the HHP show rings, and a number have been adopted by Jazzy Cats members who are there showing their own HHP felines. One kitten, renamed Feral Faucet, was adopted at a Jazzy Cats show. Later that year she had earned the title for best HHP kitten in the world, and she retired the following year after becoming the number 1 HHP adult. The current best international HHP kitten, Scout, was at Front Street until he was adopted at a Jazzy Cats show in January. Fellow shelter alum Tailor Swiff earned her 3rd best international title this year as well. Feral, Tailor and Scout will be at the show this weekend to meet guests.
All of the shelter cats and kittens in the show will be up for adoption, as will some other shelter felines who are not part of the competition. Each adoptable cat or kitten is spayed or neutered, immunized, behavior and health checked and micro-chipped, all for an adoption fee of $85.
