This year, the festival welcomed Danny Goggin from the hit Broadway show “Nunsense”, as well as producer and writer Judy San Roman whose most recent feature film “In Sickness”, based on a true story and co-written with Adam Johnson, was screened as part of the festival. On the closing night of the festival, “In Sickness” picked up two of the festivals big awards: ‘Best Actor in a Feature Film’ going to Lukas Hassel, and ‘Best Executive Producer’ going to San Roman.
About the film Hassel says this: “This script was special. I’m always attracted to complex characters with real problems and flaws and knew I had a responsibility in bringing Andrew Madera to life. I wanted to make sure my portrayal of a man with a secret, the secret of schizophrenia, was grounded in truth.”
“In Sickness” is a drama that focuses on the difficult challenges mental health issues present. When newly weds Kendall and Andrew come face to face with Schizophrenia, they soon face the ultimate question: does love really conquer all? Actor Lukas Hassel stars as Andrew Madera and delivers what is considered a “stunningly emotional and raw performance” as a man coming to terms with his own Schizophrenia as well as the potential loss of the wife he loves. San Roman says she chose Hassel for her film after seeing him in the Sci-Fi short film “Into the Dark,” which Hassel wrote, starred in and directed himself, having since screened in over 70 film festivals and picked up many awards along the way.
“I’m over the moon, because I know this film is going to touch so many people’s lives,” San Roman says about the two wins for “In Sickness”. “This film has no false notes and tells it like is with fearless honesty. It explores to delicate and dangerous situations that arise between family and friends, between husbands and wives when mental health issues are not dealt with head on. This film will challenge everything you thought you knew about these matters.” Roman performed other duties outside of just executive producer for the film, including securing all locations and casting. “In Sickness” was directed by Julius B. Kelly.
