Honoring your parents is one of the commandments. No one doubts that Jesus loved and honored Mary, his mother. Why is it that so many Christians believe it is wrong to honor her? Surely, if Jesus honored her, so should we.
What does it mean to honor Mary? First of all, it means we don’t ignore her. We give her credit where credit is due. She brought Jesus into the world and nurtured him as a child. She kept him from harm and gave him the type of love only a mother can give. Mother’s are important to each one of us. They form us, build us up, encourage us, reprimand us and best of all they love us.
The first miracle that we know Jesus worked was to honor his mother at the Wedding at Cana. They had run out of wine at the wedding celebration. “Do whatever he tells you.” Mary said. Jesus did not at first want to change the water to wine. He told Mary that his time had not yet come. By this he meant that it was not yet time to begin his ministry. But because his mother requested him to do so he changed the water into wine. The quote by St. Peter Julian Eymard must be true…”Blessed is he for whom Mary prays!”
What a tremendous responsibility Mary had in bringing Jesus into the world and raising Jesus, the Son of God. She was chosen for this role, just as we are chosen by God to do something special for him. Are we looking and listening to God to discover his plan for us?
Jesus is considered our God and King. What do we call the mother of a King? The mother of a king is a queen. That is why Mary is considered the Queen of Saints. She is a member of the Holy Family which includes St. Joseph who also loved and cared for Jesus.
When Jesus was dying on the crucifix he said to Mary, “Woman, here is your son.” Jesus said to John, “This is your mother.” John then took Mary into his home and cared for her after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Mary has become the spiritual mother of anyone who turns to her. She prays for all of her children.
Ask yourself…would Jesus ignore Mary? Would Jesus mock Mary and say what she did meant nothing? Or do you believe that Jesus treated Mary with genuine respect and love. Did Jesus treat Mary as a person meant to be honored in a special way? Did He spend time with her? What was the relationship between Jesus and Mary really like? It’s time for all of us who call ourselves Christian to follow the example of Jesus. Treat Mary as your mother!…..Love her!
