A photo of hugging dogs has managed to steal the hearts of thousands across the nation this week, and ultimately saved these lovable pets from death in being euthanized. The precious photo went viral on social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook, and ultimately helped the dogs find a family to welcome them home. Canada Journal News reveals this Tuesday, July 21, 2015, that the perfectly timed adoption came about thanks to some clever marketing, pathos appeal, and a little bit of animal love.
In just a couple of hours, two dogs set to be euthanized instead managed to find a new leash — excuse me, lease — on life. Following the actions (and no small part) of a community of animal supporters and determined enthusiasts hoping to find a home for these potential pets, Kala and Keira are being adopted. The power of social media was another major factor in their survival.
Both Kala and Keira were only a day or so away from being put to sleep (death via euthanization). Yet these lucky hugging dogs managed to show the world in a cute photo that portrayed the two embracing that they weren’t ready to give up on each other just yet. Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, an animal organization based in Atlanta, successfully found a home and some kind owners for these two initially pouting pooches together. Now, they are all smiles.
It was People Pets News who noted that the photo was originally posted via Facebook just this Monday, and in a very short time the image went viral on the Internet. It wasn’t just some good animal lovers or even the precious photo that helped spread the needed word, but some clever writing from the “personal perspective” of one of the downtrodden dogs in need.
“If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. I’ll see her as she goes down the hallway,” the text read. “She won’t come back and I’ll cry. They’ll come for me next and I won’t be as brave.”
In less than three hours (approximately two hours and six minutes), thousands and thousands of users on sites like Facebook and Twitter shared the photo. True, the image stole the hearts of many and spurred numerous “likes” and retweets and shares, but the greatest effect was that these hugging dogs now have a home — best of all, the new pets will be able to stay together with a loving owner.
Here is a post from the Angels Among Us Facebook page, which mentioned that the dogs are now heading to a vet to receive preliminary care in a “freedom ride.” This viral story just seems to show that when enough people are able to spread the word for a good cause, almost any blessing can happen.
“Exactly 2 hours and 6 minutes. That’s how long it took this amazing community of animals lovers to come together to save the lives of two canine friends. We just received word from our Angels volunteer that Kala and Keira are safely in the car and on their way to a vet -All thanks to you. From the time we posted on Facebook until the time the dogs were out of the shelter and safely in the car…2 hours and 6 minutes. That’s how you take action!! We don’t even have a picture yet as our volunteer is driving. Stay tuned for the freedom ride!! You are AMAZING people and we are grateful beyond words for your support.”
Below is also a snippet with the hugging dogs photo of the canines “asking” for help. They would be facing death if not for someone to welcome them into their lives, and it seemed that in a brief time frame, some angels certainly did appear for them. Instead of being put to sleep, both Kala and Keira now fortunately seem to have long and happy lives ahead of them.
“I’m Kala. This is Keira. We’re so scared in here. The people working in the shelters see how scared we are but just told each other that today is our deadline. We have to have someone rescue us or we’ll be “next.” Keira is black and not a “real boxer,” just a mix. She’s so brave and tells me it will be okay no matter what happens. She tells me to be brave too but I don’t know if I can be. Can you see our faces. Keira knows what will happen. You can see it in her eyes. She’s putting on a brave face for sure but I can feel her heart beating fast while I’m clinging to her. If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. I’ll see her as she goes down the hallway. She won’t come back and I’ll cry. They’ll come for me next and I won’t be as brave. We’ve comforted each other while we were here. She gave me hope when I had none. Now it’s over. Unless…”
