Mike Huckabee, presidential want-to-be, attacked the Iran nuclear agreement saying that it puts Israel on the door of the ovens that existed at Auschwitz. He also stated that nobody should trust Iran to keep its word. Huckabee doesn’t appear to trust a lot of things. He does need to get some facts straight. Anna Brand of NBC News produced an article on July 27, 2015 titled Mike Huckabee: Iran Nuclear Deal Will Lead Israelis to ‘Door of the Oven’. The Whitehouse and Jewish leaders in Israel and in the U.S. have denounced Huckabee’s linking of the Iran nuclear non-proliferation agreement to the Holocaust.
Israel doesn’t trust Iran because Iran wants to destroy Israel. Iran doesn’t trust Israel because Israel has nuclear weapons, rockets to deliver them, and a killer bee attitude when provoked. Iran doesn’t trust the US because Iran remembers that the CIA and British intelligence engineered the fall of the democratic government that existed in Iran in 1953 to reinstate the Shah of Iran under the pretext of fighting the expansion of communism. The US armed Iraq and Saddam Hussein in its war against Iran as documented in a 1992 article by Seymour Hersh of the New York Times.
The Ayatollah Khamenei has declared that weapons of mass destruction are prohibited by the Koran. That may be taken with a grain of salt given that Israel has nuclear weapons and Iran doesn’t. The US and Iran are working together to fight the Islamic State (ISIL) in Iraq and Syria. The five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany worked together to achieve an agreement that will slow or stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons. That is as close as it gets to placing the genie of world destruction back into the bottle. Ultimately every nation, including the US, needs to eliminate nuclear weapons.
If the Biblical turning of swords into plowshares is ever to begin, the world powers need to stop trying to blow their opponents into Hell. The Old Testament defines the goal for attaining world peace in Isiah 2:4 (KJV).
And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
Stopping the proliferation of nuclear weapons is necessary if the whole world population is to survive. Eventually some world power or a small group of zealots with a nuclear weapon will decide to go “all in” against an enemy. Stopping wars in general requires that the major powers stop relying upon combat superiority in favor of attacking the underlying problems causing global unrest. It is a major leap of faith to think that the US will actually trust the UN to act in the global interest, as well as in the interests of the US. It is also a leap of faith that the US’ defense industry will accept going into a new business that supports world peace instead of regional wars.
If we assume that Huckabee is just following the blowhard example of Donald Trump, some of Huckabee’s rhetoric can be excused as political expediency to get him into the first roundhouse of GOP presidential debates. Huckabee’s expressions during the various television interviews show the face of a zealot that is sincere and committed. For those that are seeking world peace, Huckabee is not a good choice for president.
