Virginia and Georgetown are the soccer teams to beat this year—not just in the DMV, but in the nation. The Cavaliers men’s (14-6-3) and women’s (23-3) soccer teams each have earned No. 2 preseason rankings from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Both teams return the bulk of their starters from runs to the NCAA College Cup last season.
Meghan Cox (Robert E. Lee), Jessie Ferrari (W.T. Woodson), Morgan Reuther (O’Connell) and redshirt Annaugh Madsen are among the returners form the 23-2 NCAA 2014 runners-up. Jasmine Wright (Severn School), Ayan Adu (Briar Woods), Mia Hoen-Beck (James Madison) and Lorato Sargeant (Langley) are freshmen. UVa. hosts Maryland Aug. 17 in a preseason game at 7 p.m.
The Hoyas are ranked No. 25 in the country in the NSCAA preseason poll. Georgetown was picked to finish in third place in the conference with 70 total points. DePaul and St. John’s each received four first-place votes and 73 total points and were selected as the conference’s preseason favorites. Marquette and Providence rounded out the top-five.
Three Hoyas were also selected to the preseason All-Big East Team, senior goalkeeper Emma Newins , senior defender Marina Paul and sophomore midfielder Rachel Corboz. The Hoyas feature freshmen Zoe Park (Walter Johnson) and Melissa Downey (McLean).
The Blue & Gray reported for training Aug. 4 and beat No. 12 West Virginia 3-2 in an Aug. 12 match. Georgetown plays at Richmond Aug. 15.
The men’s soccer team was selected No. 3 with 561 points and one first-place vote in the NSCAA 2015 Division I Preseason Poll. The Hoyas fell to eventual NCAA champion UVa.in an NCAA quarterfinal in December 5-4 on penalty kicks.
