“Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth” added a whole slew of new features to “Binding of Isaac: Rebirth”. One of these new features is the Daily Mode which allows everyone to do the same run and see how they compare to other players. It’s especially fun to see how well you score compared to your friends who own “Binding of Isaac: Rebirth.”
What goes into getting a high score for the daily though? Sometimes the things one would think are most helpful to a score might actually be doing the score in. And some things one would think might be doing great damage to a daily challenge score may be doing nothing at all.
All points gained or lost mentioned below have a 1 or 2 margin of error. The numbers were gained through extensive testing and calculating, but due to the nature of the timer constantly counting down each second, minor errors are possible.
What additional tips and tricks do you have for getting the best “Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth” daily challenge score?
Don’t take damage. That’s an obvious one, right?
Oh, but it’s a little more complicated than that! Deals with the Devil and playing blood banks negatively impact your health score. So choose your items from the Devil very carefully and decide if lost health to a blood bank is outweighed by coins and a potential blood bag.
Losing a heart, spirit heart, black heart or other health item is -20 points off your score. Picking up hearts returns 20 points.
Taking items lowers your score! This can come as a huge surprise to some at the end of their first daily when one of the penalties listed is an item penalty. You would think picking up items would be good for you; it’s certainly ideal for beating the game. But the less items you can beat the game with, the better your score will be at the end. So choose your items carefully; only take the items you know you can make the best use of.
Each item seems to have its own point value. For example the magic 8 ball is -38 from your score, the mutant spider item is -23 points and the transcendence item is -21 points.
Doing a run as fast as you can is probably what most players attempt first. Speed runs, after all, are often how players show that they are truly skilled at a game. And it is a big part of scoring in the “Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth” daily challenge. You get -1 point from your score for every second you are in the game. But running through a map too quickly can actually be damaging to your score. Going as quickly as possible can mean you miss out on extra rooms, miss out on shooting poop and fires for money, etc.
So while you want to go quickly, it’s a good idea to remember to not go too quickly. Aim for boss rush’s 20 minute requirement to beat mom, but don’t push it if it means sacrificing too many other point opportunities.
Hit up as many rooms on each floor as you can, especially on the early floors when you can get through the enemies easily or on higher level floors when you are simply so overpowered that you can blow through high-level enemies quickly. You get an extra 10 points for each new room you visit. Secret rooms, trap rooms, cursed rooms and other non-normal room types are worth more.
The 10 points stay even if you don’t defeat the enemies, so if you have an extreme surplus of bombs or Dr. Fetus, ipicac or another bomb type item, you can bomb your way through rooms quickly. For those wanting to do speed runs this may be advantageous to racking up extra points without dawdling.
While exploring, kill enemies. Generally this is a requirement anyway since you have to kill every enemy in a room to open the doors, but some speed runs involve bombing out of rooms which bypass killing the monsters. If you can take out enemies fast enough to make up for the -1 point per second, then take out those enemies.
Enemies seem to be worth different point values. Clearing a room completely nets additional bonus points, each room having different values.
Collect money while you’re exploring. Every penny you pick up, even after you’ve hit the 99 cent cap, will add 15 points to your score. A nickel will add 60 points to your score.
Spending money on shops, judgment beggars and reroll machines will remove 3 points per coin.
Bombs and keys
Don’t forget to pick up bombs and keys while you’re grabbing that money and defeating enemies. Picking up a single bomb adds 22 points to your score. Using a bomb will cause a -17 penalty.
Similarly, picking up a key will add 34 points. Using a key will cause a -16 point penalty. Keep in mind just visiting a treasure room is worth more so don’t hesitate to take a peek inside. But opening golden chests, which cost you -16 points for the key and will cost a variable number of points depending on the item inside, should be done with caution.
Pills and tarot cards
Pills by themselves, whether collecting them or using them, doesn’t cause any change to your point score. What a pill contains may cause a change. If you collect a health up pill, you will gain 20 points for using that pill and similarly a health down pill or a bad trip pill will cause -20 points to your score. If you get a pretty fly pill you will lose points for taking an item. But range up, tear up and other basic pills cause no change when used.
The same rules apply to tarot cards. The use of a card by itself will not change your score, but whatever benefits it causes will add to your score.
To go along with the timed aspect of the “Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth” daily score, completing boss rush can give a big boost to your final score. 4,444 points, to be exact. You have to defeat Mom in 20 minutes or less in order to get boss rush to open up.
If the daily challenge ends with Mom there will be a boss rush available if you defeat mom in under 20 minutes.
Another one to go with timing. If you make it through the Mom’s Heart/It Lives boss fight in under 30 minutes you can reach the Blue Womb. Here you’ll fight the new boss, Hush. This gets a whopping 5,555 points added to your score.
The fight with Hush can only be done if the daily seed goes to Mom’s Heart/It Lives. If it ends before Mom’s Heart/It Lives a Hush fight is not possible.
???, also known as Blue Baby, is the final boss of the Chest floor. Defeating Blue Baby gives an additional 4,000 points to your daily challenge score.
This fight is only available if the daily seed goes into the Chest. If the daily ends before the Chest you will not be able to fight Blue Baby.
The Lamb is the final boss in the Dark Room. At the time of writing this it has not been encountered for a daily run so the number of points it is worth are unknown. Since ??? is worth 4,000 bonus points, it’s reasonable to assume The Lamb is worth the same since they are both the final bosses of their respective floors.
The Lamb can only be fought if the daily challenge goes to the Dark Room. If it ends before the Dark Room The Lamb cannot be fought.
Mega Satan is yet another optional boss that appears in both the Chest and Dark Room. You must have the golden key or Dad’s Key item to open the door Mega Satan is behind. Defeating him adds an additional 6,666 points to your score.
The fight is only available if the daily seed goes into the Dark Room or the Chest. If the daily challenge for “Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth” ends before the Dark Room or Chest, or you do not have a way to open the Mega Satan door then you will not be able to do this fight.
Don’t upload a daily score during Steam maintenance
As discovered by popular “Binding of Isaac” youtuber NorthernLion, attempting to upload a daily challenge score during Steam maintenance will cause the score to not upload and the game to crash. You’ll be locked out of that daily as if you started and quit before getting any points. You’ll be saddled with a 0 for that day’s challenge.
