When hearing the word “Halloween” what do you automatically think of? Trick-or-Treat!
Trick-or-Treat means people eat lots and lots of candy. Candy can be very enjoyable. But there is a price that comes with eating candy. Everyone’s health deteriorates when eating excess amounts. We should follow the rule-of-thumb, nothing in excess and everything in moderation. But let’s be honest. How many people eat candy in moderation?
Candy is any sort of sweet tasting food made with sugar. Do you know how many foods are made with sugar? Almost everything has some sugar in it. Sugar is like a hidden danger. We don’t see it. We don’t always know we are eating it. But sugar is there; it is always there.
Why should we be worried about sugar? Because sugar in excess is extremely bad for our bodies. Sugar is hard for the body to digest. Sugar causes trouble for the heart- possibly leading to heart disease. Sugar can be a cause of cancer- because the body doesn’t know how to properly digest this ingredient. Sugar causes people to be overweight. To be exact, this ingredient goes straight to the belly area and causes belly fat. Because it is difficult for the body to digest, too much sugar can cause your body and your brain to become sluggish. Instead of having energy, it can do the opposite, you can have a lack of energy. The worst part about sugar, if you eat too much it can become an addiction. The body will feed on the amount of sugar it receives daily and will soon feel like it needs more and more of it. Notice the headaches or the stomach pain when going without sugar for long periods?
Are you health conscious? Do you think you don’t eat sugar? Do you eat any of the following food items? Bread, crackers, potatoes, popcorn, chips, yogurt, ice cream, etc. All of these foods, when digested, break down into sugars. The danger when so much food breaks down into sugars is that when it digests into the body the body doesn’t know what to do with this food. Glucose goes into the blood stream and causes problems with cells distributing proper nutrients to other areas of the body. So no nutrients or very little nutrients goes throughout the body. When this happens over the course of time, the body will develop the health condition known as Diabetes.
The danger with Diabetes is the sugar in your body becomes off balance making your body susceptible to many dangers. Problems such as the following: loss of eyesight, nerve damage, loss of limbs- specifically with the feet, kidney damage, heart conditions, skin problems, loss of hearing, all can happen if your blood sugar is not kept in check. Make a regular doctor’s appointment, stay active, manage weight, reduce stress, and get enough sleep- approximately eight hours, are several things to do to help control blood sugar levels.
The main way to control blood sugars is to not eat or drink sugary foods. Stick with raw foods- or natural foods. Natural fruits, lots of vegetables (especially dark colored greens), natural protein- such as nuts, legumes, chicken, fish, and drinking lots of water will help keep you healthy.
During this holiday season: Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, are you still going to grab for that sugary food or beverage? Think twice. Go for the natural and healthy food item!
Stay healthy. Be healthy. Feel healthy.
Enjoy the holidays!
