Wedding season has begun and with it comes the dreaded responsibility of dressing the part. Of course, you want to be original as to not wear the same outfit as any other guest, but you also do not want to outshine the bride. In order to make your wedding guest preparations a little bit easier, here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for your attire.
Make sure that you know what colours the bride has chosen for her big day. The last thing you want to do is match the bridesmaids or blend in with the floral arrangements. You are a guest and do not want to be mistaken for an extra member of the wedding party.
THEME OR DRESS CODE
Some weddings have themes or even dress codes, such as black tie or vintage. Make sure to keep the theme or dress code in mind when shopping for your outfit. You would not want to end up at a bohemian wedding in an evening gown, such as this one from ASOS, when it clearly belongs at a black tie affair. If your favourite dress does not fit the theme, branch out and try something new. It’s all for the sake of the soon-to-be married couple.
LOCATION OR DESTINATION
Find out whether the wedding will take place in a church, outside in a garden or even in a warm, southern location and keep this in mind when choosing your attire. At a church, your outfit should stay on the conservative side, but a southern location calls for a flowing, breezy skirt or dress. If the wedding is outdoors, make sure you check the weather and bring a shawl or blazer incase a cool breeze begins to blow.
TIME OF DAY
These days, weddings are held at all different hours of the day. Some opt for a breakfast wedding, complete with a large brunch. Others, opt for an afternoon affair, just before sunset, but the party people often hold their weddings at night and dance well into the next morning. The time of day will make your outfit choice a lot easier, as a brunch wedding asks for different attire than an all-night party. A dress like this one has far too much bling for a morning wedding and suits an evening occasion much better.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ACCESSORIES
If you are a little uneasy about experimenting with your dress or skirt, try using accessories to incorporate the theme or certain colours into your outfit. Bohemian weddings would gladly welcome the appearance of a flower crown and church weddings often accept fascinators or large brimmed hats. Bold jewelry is perfect for a more eccentric wedding, where pearls and diamonds are reserved for a more vintage occasion. Shoes are another way to make or break your outfit. Higher heels are great for indoor weddings, where your heels will not get stuck in soft ground. Beach weddings could be a great place to opt for foot jewelry instead of shoes. Accessories are a great way to be adventurous without overdoing it as a guest.
WHEN IN DOUBT…
Check with the bride. It is her day after all and she will know whether your choice of outfit fits into her vision of the day. Of course, she is very busy with the planning, so only ask her if you have run out of all other ideas. Just remember, you are a guest and your main responsibility is to support the couple on their very special day.
