At the 2015 Wuhan Open, the top eight ranked women players in singles each got a bye in the first round and were automatically through to the second round. Those eight women players are Simona Halep at #1, Maria Sharapova at #2, Petra Kvitova at #3, Caroline Wozniacki at #4, Garbine Muguruza at #5, Angelique Kerber at #6, Carla Suarez Navarro at #7, and Karolina Pliskova at #8.
Serena Williams, who is the #1 ranked women tennis player in the world, is not playing in the 2015 Wuhan Open. The inaugural Wuhan Open was played last year in 2014 and Petra Kvitova was the winner. Petra earned $441,000 for her win. This year the prize money has increased by over 3% for the winner.
Eugenie Bouchard, who was the runner-up last year to Petra Kvitova, was unable to play this year in the Wuhan Open due to concussion like symptoms. Eugenie Bouchard suffered a concussion at the 2015 U.S. Open on September 4, 2015, when she fell in the women’s locker room and hit her head. Eugenie flew to China to play in the Wuhan Open but had severe headaches before her first match against Belinda Bencic and she was forced to withdraw before playing.
