Filmmaker Jonathan A. Moody loves the the 80s-style horror films. And he loves recreating those types of films. Just check out “Scary Story Slumber Party Volume 2”, the pending sequel to “Scary Story Slumber Party”. Moody is in the process of raising money for the sequel, and took a few moments to drop by DC Actors Examiner to tell us what makes him tick…
Q – What inspired “Scary Story Slumber Party?”
My favorite show growing up was “Are you afraid of the Dark”, so I started tinkering with ideas for an anthology series and I originally created “Scream Queen Campfire”.
Before we started working on that though I had been experimenting with some short films. “The Pledge” and “Valentine’s Prey” were the first 2 I did. After that I started to work on a few more and I got enough to make a 75 minute feature but I needed something to hook it in. I thought to myself, “Why don’t I make it a throwback to the 80s films like “Slumber Party Massacre” and have it be three girls hanging out at a slumber party telling the story. So that’s pretty much came to be.
Q – How did you cast it?
We knew we needed some names in the film. I had worked with Devanny Pinn on “The Pledge” and “Valentine’s Prey”. Then when it became the anthology film it is today I decided to get some more names like Jackey Hall in the segment “The Dare”, Sierra Holmes (VH1’s “Scream Queens”) in the segment “Unlucky Night”, DaNae West was in the segment “Bashed”, and Heather Dorff had done a movie called, “Event Invitation” that became a part of it. The rest of the cast were locals who I thought were excellent actors.
Q – What kind of reception did it get?
The people who have seen and reviewed it have given it mostly glowing reviews. You never can please everyone but I’m glad the people that really got it, got it.
Q – What will be different about the sequel?
Different cast. Different stories. It will pretty much be in the same vein as the first. Also since we’re planning this as a double feature we’re gonna have Sarah French play Vampula… inspired by Elvira and Vampira. She will be hosting both films so that’ll be fun.
Q – What horror films inspire you?
I find inspiration in all horror films good or bad but my favorite are: “Evil Dead”, “The Conjuring”, “Friday the 13th”, “Scream”, and many others. The stuff that have inspired this series have been “Are you afraid of the dark”, “Tales from the Crypt”, and “The Willies.”
Q – How much money are you looking to raise for the sequel?
We want to eventually get 10 grand. We’re looking to shoot a few shorts and raise three grand on Indiegogo. We’re down to our last 6 days. We’ll see what we can do.
Q – What are perks?
The perks are awesome stuff you can get from Indiegogo. We got DVDs of “Scary” 1 and 2 (even a combo), T-shirts, even a Clapboard from the film. As well as many credits including: Special thanks, Associate Producer, all the way to Executive Producer. You can also get a copy of it online before anyone else.
Q – When do you expect to release the new film?
That will depend on the distribution company but if you donate to the film you will get sooner than its released from a distribution company.
