Now that summer is allegedly in full-swing for my fellow Midwesters (weather permitting), it is time to take advantage of all of the amazing, outdoor events – with a vintage twist of course – that summer has to offer.
One event to look out for next year which has unfortunately already passed, is the Downtown Hammond Council Eat, Shop, and Rock: Browse to the Beat Sidewalk Sale & Fest. This event is always hosted annually on the fourth Saturday in June, located on Hohman Avenue and Williams Street (between Carroll and Doty, Williams Street is closed for the event) located in downtown Hammond, Indiana. The event is a celebration of the 60s, 70s, and The Beatles. The event features live entertainment, a singing contest, a sidewalk/rummage sale, vintage/hotrod cars on display, and a bean bag tournament. Save the date for next year, Saturday, June 25th, 2016, from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
** You can purchase your funky, Beatles merchandise at this event in preparation for Beatles Fest 2015 (see Beatles Fest details below). **
Coming up this weekend, July 24th – 26th, is the Whiting Robertsdale Commerce Pierogi Fest. Although it sounds hokey, it is a lot of fun. There is a pierogi parade on Friday the 24th and a pierogi toss on Sunday the 26th. The event stretches down 119th Street in Whiting, Indiana, and features live entertainment, life-sized walking and talking Polish pastries and pierogies, traditional Polish food vendors, and crafts/shopping.
Dropping a line, vintage store, It’s Just Serendipity, will have a shopping booth, alongside the other 50+ food, craft, and shopping vendors. There are a lot of local vintage storeowners that set up booths and tents at Pierogi Fest with an array of upcycled gifts ready to purchase. Last year I walked away with a lamp made out of an old beer bottle and a spoon ring, both of which I love and use/wear every day.
** Be sure to get your photo with Mr. Pierogi and Ms. Paczki. **
The next event is one of my personal favorites, Beatles Fest. This year Beatles Fest will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary and I cannot wait. The event is on August 8th, 2015 from 2:00 PM to 11:00 PM, and is located at the corner of Hohman Avenue and Fayette/Rimbach in downtown Hammond, Indiana. This entire event is an all-ages tribute to The Beatles, featuring 10 incredible Beatles cover bands. Last year Beatles artwork and memorabilia were included as prizes in a raffle, compliments of Paul Henry’s Art Gallery, which is located nearby on Hohman Avenue and Sibley. It is definitely an event that you do not want to miss.
The last event on my downtown Hammond list is the 10th Annual Bizarre Bazaar on Saturday, September 19th from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. The event takes place at Harrison Park (located on Hohman Avenue & Waltham) in downtown Hammond, Indiana. Admission for this event is free. The event features many attractions including live entertainment, food vendors, children’s games and art activities, a vintage/hotrod car show, and much more (see the detailed list below).
• Arts and crafts vendors
• Food vendors
• Kids’ games & art activities
• Motorcycle and hotrod car show
• Scrabble Scramble Game

No matter what your style or taste might be, these events will surely have something up your alley. So get out and enjoy the weather and the festivities while it’s hot, it won’t last forever.
