Hallmark and many other greeting card companies are rife with verses that tout how much we love our Mothers – at least once a year on Mother’s Day.
Bringing up children is no easy task and it requires a Mother to be on her toes – well actually her feet twenty-four hours a day- seven days a week… forever.
The Ten Commandments, as handed down directly from God to Moses, explains just how important God thinks Mothers and Fathers are. God created the family first, and He chose the Mother to give birth, to nurture, love, instruct and to care for the newborn.
But because of that bond, a Mother is bound to her children for the rest of her life. As they grow older, she has to step back a pace or two, but as long as she lives, she is always standing by – in the wings – if you please – just in case.
While Mothers should be acknowledged every day of the year – for without them none of us would be here in the first place, Americans do esteem them once a year with a special day called, “Mother’s Day.”
Way back in 1868, Ann Jarvis called a group together to establish “Mother’s Friendship Day.” The purpose was to reunite families that had been divided through the Civil War. For more interesting technical facts about Mother’s Day you can read more on Wikipedia.
Have you ever thought about applying scripture to your Mother? As always, the Bible is the source of all wisdom regarding all things. It behooves children to give ear to God’s Word regarding the women who gave them life.
Below is a list of scriptures that honors that self-sacrificing lady whom God placed in our lives. Have you ever thought about your Mother in light of God’s Word? Try reading the scriptures below and see how they reflect the life of your Mother. Ask yourself, “How is this scripture like my Mother?”
For many Mother’s Day is a sad day because their mother is no longer with them and for some because they did not have a Godly Mother. Today would be a good day to thank God if you did have a Godly Mother; or pray for the mother who may have disappointed you in some way by not living up to God’s principles – she still gave you life.
1.) Proverbs 31:10-12 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
2.) Proverbs 31:26-31
She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
3.) 2 Kings 4:30 And the mother of the child said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her.
4.) Proverbs 10:1 A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.
5.) Isaiah 66:13 “As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem
6). Psalm 139:13 “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”
7.) John 19:26-27 When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour, the disciple took her into his own household.
8.) Genesis 31:49 And Mizpah; for he said, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.
9.) Numbers 6:24-26 The LORD bless you, and keep you; The LORD make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance on you, And give you peace.
10.) Ephesians 6:1-3: Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise) hat it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.
God, I thank You for my praying mother and grandmothers. Thank you that their lives were exemplary in every way and for the loving care and godly instruction I received from them.
