Honey Boo Boo and her mother, Mama June Shannon, gave a weight loss update on the May 20 episode of “The Doctors.”
Mama June was booed by the audience after revealing that Honey Boo Boo has not lost a single pound since “The Doctors” staged a weight loss intervention for the nine-year-old back in February.
Dr. Travis Stork, host of “The Doctors,” scolded Mama June for not supporting Honey Boo Boo’s diet, saying she obviously didn’t take the obesity intervention seriously.
“I don’t see any fear from you,” Dr. Stork told Mama June, who recently revealed she will get lap band weight loss surgery. “I feel a disconnect. Are you scared for your daughter, genuinely scared?”
Honey Boo Boo, whose real name is Alana Thompson, was placed on a medically supervised diet after Stork confronted Mama June about Honey Boo Boo’s obesity and poor eating habits.
The 4-foot-9 Honey Boo Boo, who weighs 125 pounds, is 55 to 65 pounds overweight, said Stork. She should weigh between 60 and 70 pounds, explained Stork, a former ER doctor.
To help with her weight loss efforts, “The Doctors” hired a dietitian to devise a meal plan for Honey Boo Boo, and also gave her a bike and encouraged her to exercise daily.
While Mama June insisted she had done her best to help Honey Boo Boo stick to her diet and exercise plan, “The Doctors” hosts said Alana’s lack of weight loss progress suggested otherwise.
“It wasn’t for me to follow the diet,” said Mama June. “I was there as support.” In response, co-host Dr. Jennifer Ashton said Honey Boo Boo’s obesity is a family issue that Mama June should take more seriously.
“When you say this isn’t a family issue, I beg to differ,” said Dr. Ashton. “Your metabolism doesn’t lie. It’s incredibly concerning to us as doctors to see a child that’s nine years old headed in only one direction. And you’ve gotten so lucky with resources that so many people couldn’t dream of affording.”
June Lost 120 Pounds on Low-Carb Diet: To Get Weight Loss Surgery
“The Doctors” experts were especially furious because Mama June had lost 120 pounds in 2013 with a low-carb diet, Celebrity Health & Fitness reported. Despite her own weight loss, they wondered why she was unable to help Honey Boo Boo lose weight.
Dr. Stork added, “We sent you all these kitchen tools to help you cook and they’re still in the boxes and haven’t even been opened.”
In response, Mama June said she was grateful for the resources the show had provided, and insisted Honey Boo Boo had stuck to her diet and did begin to exercise regularly.
In the end, “The Doctors” said even though Honey Boo Boo had not lost any weight, the fact that she’s eating healthier and exercising more was a step in the right direction.
Mama June recently revealed she lost 45 pounds with diet and exercise, as the Examiner previously reported. Shannon showed off her weight loss at a strip club in Florida last weekend, where she did a pole dance with other strippers.
Mama June plans to get lap band surgery this summer, saying her weight loss has plateaued using diet and exercise alone. Mama June, who reportedly weighs 276, hopes to achieve her goal weight of 226 pounds with lap band surgery.
