“A Bloody Kiss Tonight” is a vampire yaoi by Makoto Tateno. Riku is a flower shop delivery boy. One day, he delivers flowers to three beautiful young men who live in a mansion. Soon, he’s haunted by bizarre wet dreams. It turns out that the three young men, Keito, Saisei, and Matsuhi, are vampires. To make things more complicated, Riku is the reincarnation of Keito’s human lover. He keeps getting reborn every fifty years, only to kill Keito each time. Will history repeat itself or can the outcome be changed?
The story ideas are good ones, but the main problem is that these ideas need more than a single volume to be fleshed out. It would also have been interesting to find out how Keito’s curse actually came about. Was it done by a human looking for revenge or was it a twisted symbol of the couple’s undying love for each other? The writer also should have taken the time to explain the rules of vampire reproduction and why damphires are dangerous. It’s understandable why some of the more problematic clichés might fit a vampire yaoi better, due to the vampire’s roots in horror. But since the author tries to put in some romance, the problematic aspects stand out sharply. There’s nothing wrong with a little kinky sex and blood play, but the vampires should at least show affection to the human they’re seducing or it comes off as romanticized abuse. Honolulu vampire fans should decide if they want to read it or not.
