Three cheers for a product that gets it right when it comes to practical fitness gear: Hip Appeal, an updated fanny pack that’s fashionable, slim and comfortable. I read about it, I tested it, I like it. A lot.
In some ways, calling this a fanny pack, even an updated one, is like comparing a 1980’s analog television set to today’s flat screens. Sleek and stretchy (Micro/Poly/Spandex) so it fits under jeans or over leggings/shorts, the Hip Appeal holds your keys, cards, ID and phone while you work out. It has three pockets. Two with zippers and one with an open top.
I ran this product through three tests: a trip to the store sans purse, a walk around a park, and (via a friend) at an outdoor boot camp. These are all “pain points” to me; places where I don’t want to shelp a purse, wear a jacket just so I have pockets, or carry a gym bag that will be left unattended.
Pockets in the Hip Appeal are sized well. I tried various phones (iPhone 5 and 6, Galaxy S4), used it to hold a set of car keys, an alarm fob, driver’s license, credit card, and cash. I liked that I could set my phone to vibrate and since it was snug to me I could feel it ring. There was plenty of space for a small snack bar or a single serving pack of nuts that I like to carry with me. Sales materials state that the back zippered pocket will hold a US passport, but I didn’t test that.
A friend was impressed when she wore it to a boot camp. “I like to keep what I wear to a workout at a minimum so I was a bit skeptical,” she told me, but overall her report was great. It stayed put, held things safely, and though it rode up when she ran the track, she decided “it wasn’t irritating or annoying.” Like me, she liked having her phone and keys with her at all times. Both she and I gave it a thumbs up for comfort and practicality.
The company has priced most styles from $25.99 to $27.99, which seems a little high for a very simple product. However, it is certainly not outrageous and it does appear well made and in-line with the price of fitness apparel.
